General rules for travelling abroad by car

To cross the border by car, you must prove your identity, your right to drive the vehicle and its technical roadworthiness. It is also important to have valid car insurance that covers other countries. The rules are mainly based on the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, as well as the requirements of the countries you are entering.

🚗 If you are the owner of the car

If you are driving your own car, you will need the following documents to travel abroad:

▪️ National driving licence with expiry date. Compliant with Annex 6 to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

▪️ International driving licence. Required in some countries outside the EU and the Vienna Convention area.

▪️ Vehicle registration certificate. Original document proving ownership.

▪️ Distinctive sign of Ukraine on the car (UA). In the form of a sticker or on the number plates with the Ukrainian flag and the code UA.

▪️ Compulsory liability insurance policy (Green Card). Must be valid in the countries you plan to enter.

▪️ Vehicle registration number. Must be of international standard.

▪️ Vehicle technical inspection report (if required). Some countries may request confirmation of a technical inspection.

🚗 If you are NOT the owner of the vehicle

If you are driving someone else's vehicle, for example, a vehicle provided by a relative or friend, the list of documents will be similar, but with some additions:

▪️ National driving licence with expiry date. Must comply with the requirements of the Vienna Convention.

▪️ International driving licence. This is especially important when travelling to countries that have not ratified the Vienna Convention.

▪️ Vehicle registration certificate issued in the driver's name for the duration of the trip. A temporary certificate can be issued at the request of the car owner.

▪️ Distinctive sign of Ukraine on the vehicle. ‘UA’ sticker or marking on the number plates.

▪️ Green card (international motor insurance). Issued for the vehicle, not the driver — make sure it is valid for the entire route.

▪️ International number plate.

▪️ Vehicle technical inspection report (if required). This is particularly important for older vehicles or when entering certain EU countries.
