What documents are required for foreigners to enter Ukraine?

To cross the Ukrainian border, foreign citizens must have the following documents:

1. Foreign passport. The document must be valid for the entire duration of the stay in Ukraine. Citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter the country by presenting their ID card.

2. Visa. A visa is only required if there is no visa-free regime or if it is required by law.

3. Confirmation of the purpose of the trip. This includes documents certifying family ties, invitations from Ukrainian citizens, invitations to events or conferences, tour reservations, hotel reservations, etc.

4. Proof of financial solvency. You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds for the entire period of your stay and return to your country of origin. To do this, you can present:

– cash in hryvnia or other convertible currency;

– bank cards, account statements or ATM receipts;

– a letter of guarantee from the host party covering expenses;

– confirmation of payment for accommodation and meals;

– a contract for tourist services (voucher or travel ticket);

– a return ticket with a specified date.

5. Insurance policy. Due to the state of war, foreign insurance policies cease to be valid after crossing the Ukrainian border. The policy must be issued by a Ukrainian insurance company or a foreign insurance company with a representative office in Ukraine. It is recommended to take out insurance covering military risks, which includes standard medical care, diagnostics, treatment, as well as compensation in case of injuries or accidents related to military operations.

You can take out insurance covering military risks in just a few minutes on the Visit Ukraine portal. Travel with confidence and ensure yourself an unforgettable trip!

Visa requirements for foreigners entering Ukraine

Visa-free regime

Ukraine has a visa-free regime with more than 100 countries, allowing their citizens to enter without the need to obtain a visa. This list includes the EU, the USA, Japan, Kuwait, Uruguay and others. Citizens of these countries can stay in Ukraine for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. There are also cases where the visa-free regime is only open to certain categories of persons (for example, for citizens of Cambodia, the visa-free regime applies upon presentation of a diplomatic passport or other official ID) or under certain conditions.

You can check whether your country is on the visa-free list on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Entry with a visa

If your country does not have a visa-free regime with Ukraine, you must obtain a visa depending on the purpose and duration of your stay.

The main types of Ukrainian visas for foreigners are:

Short-term visa (type C). This visa allows you to stay in Ukraine for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It can be single, double or multiple entry, depending on the applicant's needs. Type C is usually issued for tourism, business trips (subtype C-01), private visits (subtype C-02), medical treatment and work by media representatives.

Long-term visa (type D). Issued to those who plan to stay in Ukraine for a long time or permanently. This visa entitles the holder to stay for more than 90 days and is mandatory for obtaining a temporary or permanent residence permit.

Work, study and family visas. These are the most common categories of long-term visas. They are issued for a period of up to 90 days with the possibility of multiple entries. For stays longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit upon arrival.

Transit visa. Intended for foreigners who plan to transit through Ukraine to another country. It can be single-entry (up to 5 days) or double or multiple-entry (up to one year), provided that each stay in Ukraine does not exceed 5 days.

Each type of visa is issued in accordance with established procedures, so it is important to prepare the necessary documents in advance. How to apply for a visa to Ukraine, what documents are required and how much it costs – read here.

Is it safe to travel to Ukraine right now: the security situation

Currently, there are no completely safe cities in Ukraine. Although active hostilities are mostly concentrated in the eastern and southern regions, and the western regions are relatively safe, rocket attacks periodically affect the entire territory of the country.

If you decide to visit Ukraine, follow the basic safety rules:

– always carry a document confirming your identity;

– observe the curfew – during curfew, it is prohibited to be on the streets, use transport or visit public places;

– Respond to air raid sirens – download an alarm notification app to your smartphone and, if you hear a siren, immediately go to the nearest shelter.

– Take out an insurance policy that covers war risks.

– Keep information about your blood type and any health problems with you.

– Keep an eye on the charge of your phone and power bank so that they are always ready for use.

asked questions
Is Lviv safe for tourists now?
Lviv is located in the western part of Ukraine, approximately 1000 km from the frontline. This geographical remoteness makes it one of the safest regions in the country. Compared to the frontline regions and even Kyiv, the level of threats here is much lower. At the same time, like any other city in Ukraine, Lviv occasionally experiences air alerts due to the threat of missile attacks or kamikaze drones.
