Martial law remains in effect in Ukraine, and as a result, a curfew is in place in all regions of the country (except Zakarpattia). During this period, Ukrainians have learned to adapt to all restrictions, but force majeure circumstances may arise for anyone, and it may become necessary to move around the city after curfew. We will tell you how to get home during restrictions.

Features of the curfew in Ukraine

As you know, in most regions, you cannot be on the street without a special pass from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The only exception is the need to go to a shelter in case of an air raid alarm.

Before every trip to Ukraine, even a short one, take care of your safety — get medical insurance covering military risks on the Visit Ukraine portal. This is a guarantee of support in case of an emergency.

Who does not need a pass to move around the city during curfew?

No special pass is required for representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the State Special Transport Service, the National Police, the State Border Service and some other authorities while performing their official duties.

Is it possible to call a taxi to get home safely before curfew and during restrictions without a special pass? Read on to find out.

Calling a taxi before curfew

The peak time for taxi calls is 30 to 60 minutes before the start of curfew. Ukrainians order cars to get home quickly, so the cost of the service increases.

Most calls are made on Saturday, Sunday and Friday evenings.

To avoid being left without transport, we recommend renting a car in advance on the Visit Ukraine portal. This is convenient for those who plan to travel independently in the evening or in regions with poor taxi service.

Why do taxi fares increase before curfew?

The reason is simple: the number of people wanting to travel by car increases, while the number of drivers who can fulfil orders decreases. The peak time is between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., and demand drops 15 minutes before curfew.

By the way, Visit Ukraine is a convenient place to buy tickets for trains, buses and even international destinations. Everything is in one place — no need to look for additional services.

Calling a taxi during curfew

There is information online about carriers who are ready to drive during curfew. This is due to the fact that drivers have special passes. At the same time, some taxi services only agree to drive if the passenger has the appropriate permit.

Important! The driver's special pass does not extend to passengers. If you are stopped at a checkpoint, the driver will avoid problems, as they can easily deny that they are providing a taxi service, but the passenger may be taken to the police station to establish their identity and explain the circumstances.

Do not violate the curfew and do not use transport services, even if the price for a taxi ride seems attractive!

For example, the most popular taxi services, Uber and Bolt, do not operate at all and do not accept orders during curfew. Companies pause their apps while restrictions are in place.

Rail transport during curfew

Railway stations continue to operate at night if a train is scheduled to arrive or depart during this period.

If your train is delayed and you arrive after curfew, stay at the station. With a valid ticket, you will have access to the waiting room and a basic set of products. You can also find volunteers with special passes and ask them to take you home.

If you have purchased a ticket for a night train, arrive at the station before curfew to avoid any problems.

Responsibility for violating the curfew

Ukrainian law does not provide for liability for violating the curfew. Usually, police officers draw up a report under Article 185 of the Code of Ukraine ‘On Administrative Offences,’ which punishes malicious disobedience to a police officer. Such a report can be appealed in court, which is usually the case, as cases are often closed due to the absence of an offence.

If you are stopped during curfew, do the following:

• Show your documents to the law enforcement officer;

• Allow them to inspect your belongings or vehicle;

• Calmly and without panic, explain why you are on the street.

Travelling during martial law is a big responsibility. Don't put off taking care of yourself: get medical insurance that covers war risks at Visit Ukraine.

The policy will be a reliable support in a critical situation — quick access to medical services, evacuation and 24/7 support anywhere in the country.
