We talked about how to cross the border of Ukraine in 2025 in a previous article.
Entry rules to Ukraine for UK citizens in 2025
As of 2025, UK citizens do not need a visa for Ukraine for short-term visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This rule applies for purposes like tourism, business meetings, or visiting family and friends.
Ukraine visa for UK passport holders is not required for stays shorter than 90 days in a 180-day window. However, you must strictly monitor your travel dates, as overstaying may result in penalties or entry bans.
How to stay in Ukraine legally for more than 90 days
If you plan to remain in Ukraine for over 90 days – for example, to work, study, or reside permanently – you will need to apply for a long-term visa (type D) and potentially a temporary or permanent residence permit.

In which cases do UK citizens need a visa to Ukraine?
Long-term stay
A visa to Ukraine for British citizens becomes necessary when the intended stay exceeds 90 days or includes specific purposes like employment, education, or family reunification.
Work permits, study programs, or residency applications all require the proper visa. In such cases, it's crucial to prepare documents in advance and get assistance, if needed.
Humanitarian purposes, family reunification
For family reunification, volunteering or humanitarian missions, a special type of visa and supporting documents may also be required.
If you plan to stay longer or need legal support, Visit Ukraine's migration lawyers will assist you with all the paperwork.
Types of Ukrainian visas for UK citizens
- Short-term visa (type C)
This visa is issued to foreigners whose stay does not exceed 90 days within the last 180 days. It can be granted to UK citizens who plan to work or study in Ukraine for up to 90 days. The type C visa includes two subtypes – C 01 (business visa) and C 02 (private visa).
- Long-term visa (type D)
This visa is issued to foreigners who wish to enter Ukraine for temporary but extended stay or for permanent residence. The type D visa allows foreigners to stay or reside in Ukraine for more than 90 days. It is the main type of Ukraine visa for British planning long-term relocation.
- Transit visa
This type of visa is issued to foreigners who intend to pass through Ukraine in transit while traveling to a third country. A transit visa to Ukraine can be issued as a single-entry visa for up to five days, or as a double- or multiple-entry visa for up to one year, provided that each entry does not exceed five days.

How to apply for a Ukraine visa from UK?
Step-by-step process of applying for a Ukrainian visa in UK
Step 1 – Determine the type of visa you need
Before submitting your documents, it is important to correctly identify the purpose of your trip and the appropriate visa type:
- Type C (short-term visa) – for stays up to 90 days;
- Type D (long-term visa) – for work, study, immigration;
- Transit visa – for crossing Ukraine en route to a third country.
Step 2 – Register and fill out the online Ukraine visa application on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine
You must specify your citizenship, the purpose of travel, and the country from which you can apply. At this stage, you will also receive information about the specific Ukrainian embassy, consulate, or visa center in that country where you can submit your application.
Step 3 – Prepare the complete set of documents
Depending on the type of visa, the list of documents may vary. In general, you will need: a valid international passport, a standard-format photo, confirmation of your travel purpose (such as a work contract, university acceptance letter, or invitation from a private or legal entity in Ukraine), medical insurance, proof of sufficient funds, return tickets or travel itinerary.
Step 4 – Submit your visa application
Once your documents are prepared, you can apply in person at the Embassy of Ukraine in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh, Visa Application Centre of Ukraine in London.
Step 5 – Pay the consular fee
A fee is charged for processing all visa types: 65 US dollars for standard processing (10–30 working days) or 130 US dollars for expedited processing (up to 5 working days).
Step 6 – Wait for the decision and receive your visa
Please note that in some cases, visa processing may take up to 30 days.
Where to apply for a Ukraine visa in UK?
Persons requiring a visa must obtain it at the Embassy of Ukraine in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh, and the Ukrainian Visa Application Center in London.
Document package for obtaining a Ukrainian visa
To apply for a type D visa, you must submit:
1. A valid passport that remains valid for at least three months beyond the end of the trip, has at least two blank pages, and is not older than 10 years.
2. A completed and signed visa application form (to be printed after registration on the website http://visa.mfa.gov.ua and booking an appointment). Separate visa forms must be submitted for children listed in a parent’s passport. Forms for minors must be signed by their parents or legal guardians.
3. A color passport-size photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm).

6. The consular fee must be paid after consultation with the responsible consular officer.
7. Documents confirming the purpose of your trip – an invitation from an employer, university, etc.
Important! Documents issued by foreign authorities must be legalized and translated into Ukrainian.
The consul is authorized to request additional documents beyond those submitted by the applicant and reserves the right to conduct a personal interview.
After the interview, the application may require further administrative processing.
How long does it take to obtain a D visa?
The embassy reviews the visa application and makes a decision to approve or deny the visa within the following timeframes:
- Expedited processing – up to 5 working days from the date of receiving all required documents. A double consular fee applies.
- Standard processing – up to 10 working days from the date of receiving documents. This period may be extended to 30 working days if additional checks are needed.
Can you get an electronic visa (e-visa) to Ukraine from the UK?
Unfortunately, Ukraine currently does not offer an electronic visa for UK citizens, so all documents must be submitted in person.
What other documents are required for entry into Ukraine besides a visa?
According to the current Ukraine visa requirements for UK citizens, you will need:
1. Type D visa
It must be obtained at the embassy or consulate of Ukraine in the UK before the trip. Based on this visa, you will later apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit within Ukraine.
2. Invitation from the host party
Depending on your purpose (employment, education, family reunification), this can include:
- a contract with an employer;
- an official letter from an educational institution;
- an invitation from a family member legally residing in Ukraine;
- documents from a charity or volunteer organization.
3. Proof of accommodation
For long-term stays, you need to provide confirmation of residence in Ukraine – a rental contract, property ownership, or invitation with address.
4. Criminal record certificate
In most cases, when applying for a D visa or residence permit, you will need an apostilled certificate confirming no criminal record in the UK.
5. Proof of financial means
You must demonstrate you can support yourself in Ukraine – for example, bank statements or proof of funding (scholarship, salary, etc.).
6. Medical insurance
A medical insurance for Ukraine policy is mandatory both when applying for a visa and when obtaining a residence permit.
For long-term stays, it is especially important to have war risk travel insurance Ukraine, which covers risks associated with active conflict or terrorism.
Is insurance required for entering Ukraine?
According to Ukrainian law, foreigners must have a valid insurance policy for the entire period of their stay in Ukraine. The insurance must be issued by a Ukrainian insurance company or a foreign company that has a representative office or a cooperation agreement with a Ukrainian insurer.
Ukrainian insurance companies offer several types of policies:
- Standard medical insurance covers expenses due to illness or accident.
- War risk travel insurance Ukraine includes medical coverage and additionally insures against incidents caused by active hostilities, passive military risks, or terrorist acts.
