Education in the crosshairs: war and its consequences
Experts in international law note that the war has signs of genocide, and the targeted destruction of educational infrastructure is one of the components of this policy.
The loss of opportunities for safe and stable education forces many graduates to look for alternatives abroad.
Disruption of the educational process due to blackouts, shelling, and temporary occupation changes the educational trajectories of the younger generation.
Statistics confirm the trend
According to the Austrian Statistical Office, the number of Ukrainian students in Austrian universities has increased by 60% in three years:
2021/2022 - 2,077 students
2022/2023 - 2,652 students
2023/2024 - 3,324 students
Oleksandra Kovalska, CEO of the educational company “Look Wider,” reports that in just one year, the number of requests for admission increased from 6,600 in 2023 to 8,500 in 2024, which demonstrates an overall increase in interest by 30%.

Where are Ukrainian youth headed?
The most popular destinations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, and Poland.
According to a study by the savED Foundation, 26% of Ukrainian youth have already expressed a desire to study abroad. And almost 400,000 Ukrainian students were abroad in 2023 alone, which creates the preconditions for an even greater increase in the number of applicants to foreign universities in the future.
Austria: comfort and accessibility
The educational company “Look Wider” conducted an analysis, according to which Austria offered the most comfortable conditions for Ukrainians in 2025.
More than 15 universities in Austria, including the University of Vienna, the Technical University of Graz, and the Vienna University of Economics, offer English-language programs, which lowers the barrier to entry.
Education as an investment in Ukraine's future
Dmytro Vyhovskyi, the founder of Look Shyroshe, emphasizes:
“During the war, our mission is to provide young people with quality education and, after graduation, to help them return to Ukraine to rebuild its economy as qualified professionals.”
Despite the challenging conditions, Ukrainian youth are eager to learn, and the world is opening up new opportunities for them.
The main task of the state and society is to create the conditions under which these young professionals will return and build a new, strong Ukraine.
