Despite the hostilities in the east and south of the country, a significant part of Ukraine lives a relatively peaceful life. The central, western and some northern regions have become a kind of refuge where the economy is recovering, businesses are operating and cultural life is thriving. This stability attracts foreigners with different goals: volunteers who want to help, businesspeople who see new opportunities, journalists who cover events from the inside, and even tourists who are interested in the unique experience of staying in a country fighting for its freedom. Despite the existing risks, many find opportunities for a safe and meaningful stay in Ukraine.

Which regions are considered the safest for travel?

The regions of Central, Western and parts of Northern Ukraine are considered the safest to visit.

Lviv Oblast is the cultural capital of the country, located far from the active combat zone.

Kyiv and the Kyiv region (excluding the border areas with Belarus) are the political and economic centre, where infrastructure is being actively restored.

Chernivtsi region is a picturesque region with a rich history and culture, located in the south-west of the country.

Ivano-Frankivsk region is a mountainous region in the Carpathians, known for its nature and traditions.

Zakarpattia region (Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, etc.) is the westernmost region of the country, bordering several European countries.

Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, and Poltava regions are relatively safe, although air raid sirens may sound here as well.

At the same time, you should definitely avoid travelling to regions where active hostilities are taking place or which are in close proximity to the border with the aggressor country and temporarily occupied territories. These regions include:

– Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions (except for territories controlled by Ukraine).

– Border areas of Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

– Mykolaiv region (except for certain rear areas).

What you need to know before arriving: rules of conduct under martial law

Staying in Ukraine under martial law requires special attention and compliance with certain rules:

Air raid sirens and how to respond: An air raid siren is a warning of a missile strike or air attack. If the siren sounds, immediately proceed to the nearest shelter (bomb shelter, basement, metro station). Remain in the shelter until the all-clear signal is given.

Find out how public transport works in Ukraine during air raid sirens on the Visit Ukraine portal.

Prohibitions on photographing/filming infrastructure: It is strictly forbidden to take photographs or videos of military facilities, checkpoints, critical infrastructure (power stations, bridges, administrative buildings, etc.). This may be considered espionage and have serious consequences.

Document checks: Law enforcement officers and military personnel may check your documents. Always carry your passport or other form of ID with you. Be prepared to answer their questions politely.

Transportation, curfew (if applicable), restrictions: Different regions may have a curfew during which it is prohibited to be on the streets and in public places without special permission. Public transportation may be limited or change its schedule. Plan your route carefully before travelling and take into account possible restrictions.

4. Always carry your original passport and copies of important documents with you.

5. Plan your route taking into account the availability of shelters.

6. Avoid conflict zones and participation in rallies or mass gatherings.

7. Pay attention to suspicious objects and persons and report them to law enforcement agencies.

8. Learn basic phrases in Ukrainian.

Why you should take out medical insurance covering war risks

In the context of thorough preparation for a trip to Ukraine, taking out medical insurance is not just recommended, but an absolutely necessary step. It is especially important to choose a policy that covers military risks.

A reliable and convenient way to purchase such insurance is through the Visit Ukraine portal. Here you can easily find and purchase a medical insurance policy that includes coverage for treatment in case of injuries caused by military events.

This insurance is not just a feeling of peace of mind and confidence in a difficult situation. It is real financial support in case of unforeseen circumstances. With a policy covering war risks, you can be sure that you will receive qualified medical assistance if necessary without having to urgently search for significant funds.
