If you're planning a trip to Ukraine from Canada in 2025 – whether for tourism, work, or long-term stay – it's essential to understand the current visa to Ukraine for Canadian citizens requirements. In this article, we’ll explain whether Canadians need a visa for Ukraine, how to apply for one, the types of Ukrainian visas available, required documents, and other important travel considerations.
We talked about how to cross the border of Ukraine in 2025 in the previous article.
Ukraine Entry Requirements for Canadians in 2025
As of 2025, Canadian citizens do not need a visa to Ukraine for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa-free rule applies to tourism, business trips, or visiting family and friends. However, it is crucial to carefully track your travel dates, as overstaying can lead to fines or a future ban on entry.
For any longer stay or different purpose—such as employment, study, or immigration—a visa to Ukraine is required.
How to stay in Ukraine legally for more than 90 days?
If you plan to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days – for example, for work, study, or permanent residence – you will need to apply for a long-term visa (Type D) and then for a temporary or permanent residence permit.

This visa is issued to foreigners whose stay will not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period. It may be granted to Canadian citizens who plan to work or study in Ukraine for up to 90 days. Type C visas include two subtypes: C-01 (business visa) and C-02 (private visa).
- Long-Term Visa (Type D)
Issued to foreigners intending to enter Ukraine for temporary but extended stays, or for permanent residence. The D visa grants the right to reside in Ukraine for more than 90 days.
- Transit Visa
This visa is for foreigners transiting through Ukraine en route to a third country. It may be issued as a single-entry visa for up to five days or as a double- or multiple-entry visa valid for up to one year, provided each entry does not exceed 5 days.

How to Apply for a Ukraine Visa from Canada?
Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for a Ukrainian Visa in Canada
Step 1 – Identify the Type of Visa You Need
Before submitting any documents, clearly define the purpose of your visit and the appropriate visa type:
- Type C (short-term visa) – for up to 90 days;
- Type D (long-term visa) – for work, study, or immigration;
- Transit visa – for passing through Ukraine en route to another country.
Step 2 – Register and Fill Out the Online Application on the MFA Website
You must indicate your citizenship, travel purpose, and the country from which you’re applying. This will determine the correct Ukrainian embassy, consulate, or visa center for submission.
Step 3 – Prepare the Complete Document Package
Required documents vary by visa type, but generally include: valid international passport, standard-sized photo, travel purpose confirmation (e.g. employment contract, university invitation, private invitation), medical insurance for foreigners in Ukraine, proof of sufficient funds, return tickets or travel itinerary.
Step 4 – Submit Your Application
You may submit your visa application in person at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, or at the Consulate of Ukraine in Edmonton or Toronto.
Step 5 – Pay the Consular Fee
A fee of $65 USD applies for standard processing (10–30 business days), or $130 USD for expedited service (up to 5 business days).
Step 6 – Wait for a Decision and Receive Your Visa
Note: in some cases, processing may take up to 30 days.
Where to Submit a Visa Application in Canada?
Those requiring a visa must apply in person at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, the Consulate in Edmonton, or the Consulate in Toronto.
Required Documents for a Ukrainian Visa
To apply for a Type D visa, the following documents must be submitted:
1. A valid passport that is valid at least three months beyond the end of your trip, has at least two blank pages, and is no more than ten years old.
2. A completed and signed visa application form (print it after registering at http://visa.mfa.gov.ua and scheduling an appointment). Separate forms are needed for children listed in a parent’s passport. Forms for minors must be signed by parents or legal guardians.
3. A color passport-sized photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
4. Valid medical insurance for foreigners in Ukraine for the requested period with minimum coverage of €30,000.
5. Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (bank statements, sponsorship letter from a host, or organization/inviter).
6. The consular fee must be paid after consultation with the responsible consular officer.
7. Documents confirming the purpose of your trip – such as an invitation from an employer, university, etc.
Important! Documents issued by foreign authorities must be legalized and translated into Ukrainian.
The consul may request additional documents and reserves the right to interview the applicant.
After the interview, your application may undergo further administrative processing.
How Long Does It Take to Process a Type D Visa?
The embassy will process and decide on the visa within the following timeframes:
- Expedited processing – up to 5 business days from the date of document receipt (double consular fee applies).
- Standard processing – up to 10 business days, extendable to 30 business days if additional checks are required.
Can Canadians Get an Electronic Visa to Ukraine?
Unfortunately, Canada is not currently eligible for an electronic visa to Ukraine, so all documents must be submitted in person.
What Other Documents Do Canadians Need to Enter Ukraine?
According to current Ukraine visa for Canadians rules, the following are required:
1. Type D Visa
Obtained at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate before departure. Based on this visa, you apply for temporary or permanent residence in Ukraine.
2. Invitation from a Host Party
Depending on your reason for travel (work, study, family reunification), this may be:
- an employment contract;
- an official letter from an educational institution;
- an invitation from a family member legally residing in Ukraine;
- documents from a charity or volunteer organization.
3. Proof of Accommodation
For long-term stays, provide confirmation of residence—rental contract, property deed, or invitation letter with address.
4. Criminal Record Certificate
In most cases, an apostilled criminal record check from Canada is required for Type D visas or residence permits.
5. Proof of Financial Means
You must demonstrate that you can support yourself in Ukraine—bank statements or funding documents (scholarship, salary, etc.).
6. Medical Insurance
Medical insurance for foreigners in Ukraine is mandatory for visa and residence permit applications. For long-term stays, we recommend insurance with war risk coverage.
Is insurance required for entering Ukraine?
According to Ukrainian law, foreigners must have a valid insurance policy for the entire period of their stay in Ukraine. The insurance must be issued by a Ukrainian insurance company or a foreign company that has a representative office or a cooperation agreement with a Ukrainian insurer.
Ukrainian insurance companies offer several types of policies:
- Standard medical insurance covers expenses due to illness or accident.
- War risk travel insurance Ukraine includes medical coverage and additionally insures against incidents caused by active hostilities, passive military risks, or terrorist acts.
We previously wrote about valid insurance policies for Ukrainians both in Ukraine and abroad.
