In February 2025, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced that the Consular Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine was resuming the issuance of electronic visas (e-visas) for citizens of certain countries.

An e-visa is a type of short-term visa for entry into Ukraine, which a foreigner can obtain through a simplified procedure without leaving their home. An electronic visa is valid for one or two entries into Ukraine for a period of up to 30 days.

For detailed information on how to apply for an e-visa from anywhere in the world, please read on.

Advantages of an e-visa

The e-visa application process is convenient, modern and fast:

1. Foreigners can submit documents for an e-visa from anywhere in the world at a time convenient for them, without having to go to the consulate or other relevant institution to receive the finished visa.

2. After submitting the documents, the status of the visa application can be monitored online.

3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine provides ongoing information support to applicants.

4. Foreigners can independently choose the visa processing time: 1 working day (urgent), 3 working days (standard procedure).

For what purposes is an e-visa issued?

The purpose of travel for an e-visa may be as follows:

– business;

– private;

– tourism;

– medical treatment;

– activities in the field of culture, science, education, sports;

– performing official duties as a foreign correspondent or representative of a foreign media outlet.

If you are planning a long-term trip to Ukraine, we recommend that you read the instructions on how to choose a type D visa.

How to obtain an e-Visa?

Step 1. Register on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (form at the link).

Step 2. Fill out the visa application form and upload a photo.

Step 3. Attach scanned copies of the following documents to the completed visa application form:

– the page of your passport containing your personal data;

– a valid medical insurance policy;

– a document confirming that you have sufficient financial means for the duration of your stay in Ukraine;

– a document confirming the purpose of the trip (in Ukrainian or English).

Important! Martial law has been introduced in Ukraine, and rocket attacks and air raid sirens are a regular occurrence. When choosing an insurance policy, we recommend that you pay attention to policies that cover military risks.

Step 4. Payment of the consular fee.

Step 5. Obtaining an e-visa.

Depending on the purpose of your planned trip to Ukraine, the documents confirming the purpose of your trip may include:

Business trip: an invitation from a legal entity, state body/institution/enterprise/organisation or a document confirming financial investments in Ukraine.

Private trip: invitation from a citizen of Ukraine or a foreigner who has a temporary or permanent residence permit; a document confirming ownership of real estate in Ukraine or family ties.

Tourist trip: documents confirming the tourist purpose of the trip (paid tour in Ukraine, booking of excursions and hotels, etc.).

Medical trip: invitation from a medical institution or healthcare facility.

The same rules apply to activities in the fields of culture, science, education or sport as to business trips.

When applying for an e-Visa for travel for the purpose of performing official duties as a foreign correspondent or representative of a foreign media outlet, a request from the relevant foreign media outlet must be submitted.

Refusal to issue an e-Visa

If a foreigner is refused an e-Visa, a letter with the refusal decision will be sent to their email address within a specified period. It should be noted that refusals to issue e-visas are significantly less common than refusals to issue standard visas. Most often, refusals are related to technical deficiencies in the documents submitted. The most common grounds for refusal are

– failure to comply with the requirements for photographs;

– incorrect or incomplete information when filling out the application form;

– incomplete list of required documents.

Please note! If you have been denied an e-Visa, you can reapply.

Safety measures while in Ukraine

1. Download and actively use the Air Alarm app: This is the most important tool for responding to air threats in a timely manner. Turn on notifications and proceed to the nearest shelter immediately when you hear the signal. Find out in advance where the nearest bomb shelters or safe places are located.

2. Learn about local rules and restrictions: The security situation may vary from region to region. Pay attention to curfews, movement restrictions, and any other instructions from local authorities. This may include restrictions on visiting certain areas or attending large gatherings.

3. Have an emergency plan and an emergency kit: Always know what to do in case of danger (where to take shelter, evacuation routes). Put together an emergency kit with essential items: documents, money, water, a first aid kit, food supplies, a flashlight and a phone charger.

4. Avoid crowded places and potentially dangerous areas: These include military facilities, border areas, and places that were previously occupied or shelled. Be especially careful at public events and stay away from abandoned or suspicious objects.

5. Stay connected and informed: Keep in touch with family and friends. Follow official sources of information (state media, local authorities) and avoid spreading unverified rumours. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your local authorities or consular office.
