Who needs insurance for a trip to Spain?

Spain is a Schengen country, which imposes certain entry requirements, one of which is the need to have an insurance policy. Depending on whether you are travelling to Spain to have a holiday, work or live, the type and scope of coverage may differ.

Insurance for tourists

For short-term trips on a tourist visa or visa-free regime, you need health insurance. This is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a visa to Schengen countries, including Spain.

It is important that the policy should cover at least €30,000 for medical services for the entire period of stay in the country and cover all Schengen countries.

Insurance for work in Spain

If you are travelling to Spain to work, short-term work visas (e.g. seasonal work) also require health insurance. In addition, your employer may provide compulsory insurance, but it is recommended to have a policy with broader coverage, including services such as emergency medical care and repatriation to your home country.

For long-term work (more than 90 days) or when applying for a residence permit, you may be asked to provide more comprehensive health insurance. Employees in Spain have access to the public healthcare system through social security contributions, but you can also take out a private policy for extended coverage.

Retirees and people planning a long-term stay in Spain need health insurance that should cover a full range of services. Most often, these are private insurances that provide access to high-quality medical care. This is especially important for those who will not use the public healthcare system.

Do Ukrainians need insurance?

Ukrainians moving to Spain under the temporary protection programme are not required to have insurance to enter the country. However, this document is desirable.

Of course, refugees who arrive in Spain receive medical care under temporary protection, which will give you the opportunity to visit doctors for free. However, the first time you arrive, in particular when applying for documents and health insurance, it is better to be sure that in case of an emergency or illness, you will be able to receive guaranteed assistance in a language you understand.

Also, given the high cost of medical services in Spain, an insurance policy can save you a lot of money in case of illness. Therefore, we recommend that you purchase a travel insurance policy before travelling.

What types of insurance may be required in Spain?

The insurance requirements may vary for each category of traveller, but the main types of insurance cover

Health insurance. This is a mandatory type of insurance for all categories of travellers. It covers the cost of treatment in case of illness or accident, including inpatient and outpatient treatment, emergency surgery, transportation and repatriation.

Accident insurance. Accident insurance is especially relevant for those planning an active holiday or sports activities. It covers compensation in case of injury or disability.

Public liability insurance. For those who are going to work in Spain, in some cases, you may need public liability insurance, which covers damages caused to third parties through your fault.

Insurance policy for transport. If you are travelling by car, you will definitely need a Green Card. In the absence of this document, tourists may not be allowed into this country.

How to buy insurance on the Visit Ukraine portal?

To apply for an insurance policy on the Visit Ukraine portal, you need a foreign passport and an identification number (TIN):

1. Prepare your passport and TIN;

2. Select an insurance package (that meets your needs).

3. Select the period of insurance validity

4. Enter your date of birth.

5. Fill in the form with the data of the insured person (full name, e-mail, contact phone number, passport details, citizenship and place of residence).

6. Sign the insurance contract (a special code will be sent to the specified e-mail).

7. Pay for the insurance policy.

The finished policy will be sent to the specified e-mail. You do not need to print it out, because the electronic version has the same legal force as the paper one.
