Ukrainians do not need a visa for a short stay in Montenegro. According to current legislation, Ukrainian citizens can freely stay in Montenegro for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without the need for a visa. This rule applies to both tourist trips and short-term business visits. It is important to ensure that you do not exceed the permitted period of stay, as this may result in fines or other sanctions upon re-entry. But if your goal is to study, work or stay for a long time, you should take care of obtaining the appropriate visa or residence permit in advance.

In this material, we explain in detail when you need a visa to travel to Montenegro, how to apply for it correctly and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

When do Ukrainians need a visa to enter Montenegro?

Thanks to the visa-free regime, citizens of Ukraine can stay in Montenegro without a visa for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This rule applies to tourist trips, business trips, visiting friends or participating in short-term events.

To stay longer than 90 days, you need a long-term visa and a temporary or permanent residence permit.

A long-term visa is required for Ukrainians in Montenegro if they:

- Plan to stay for more than 90 days. For example, for long-term treatment, participation in courses, living with family.

- Studying at universities, colleges, etc.

- For work or internships, including under a contract or through an agency.

- Reunification with family legally residing in Montenegro.

What is the fastest way to cross the Ukrainian border - by train, bus or private transfer.

Main types of long-term visas to Montenegro

A long-term visa of category D allows a foreigner to visit Montenegro for six months within one year. This visa is issued for one, two or multiple entries. The grounds for issuing a long-term visa of category D can be:

- Work

Ukrainians who wish to work in Montenegro must apply in advance for a work visa and a permit to the country. To apply for a work visa, you must have a job offer.

- Study

Montenegrin higher education institutions have expanded their course offer, and more and more foreign students are choosing to study here.

Montenegro provides for student training within the framework of the residency program. Students from non-EU countries must apply for student residence before arriving in Montenegro.

- Doing Business

According to Montenegrin law, it is not enough to simply establish a company in Montenegro. To obtain a temporary residence permit, most people who want to go this route set up their own company and then hire themselves as the CEO.

The good news is that Montenegro has a simple company registration process. And being the CEO of your own company meets Montenegro’s employment and residency requirements.

- Seasonal Work

Seasonal work, such as in the hospitality and tourism sectors, is one way to obtain a temporary residence permit in Montenegro.

There are several other reasons for obtaining a visa and temporary residence permit in Montenegro, including scientific research, medical treatment, humanitarian work and for international celebrities, but these are only issued in a small number of cases.

To determine which visa is right for you and prepare the necessary package of documents, consult a visa lawyer at Visit Ukraine. This will help to avoid mistakes and speed up the process of obtaining the document.
