Who needs insurance to enter Iceland?

- Tourists — insurance is mandatory: minimum coverage of €30,000, including evacuation and repatriation.

- Students — a long-term student or work visa also requires insurance for the entire duration of study/work.

- Employees — similar to students — need medical coverage for the entire period of employment.

Do you need insurance for visa-free travel?

For citizens arriving without a visa (up to 90 days), insurance is not mandatory but highly recommended. Firstly, local medical care without insurance is expensive, and secondly, accidents can happen even on short trips.

Local state insurance for refugees

The Icelandic healthcare system is public, nationwide, and funded by taxes. Refugees who have obtained legal status have access to local medical services at the same level as the native population, meaning they do not need to seek separate insurance.

General requirements for insurance policies for short-term and long-term trips to Iceland

All foreigners planning a short-term trip to Iceland for tourism or business purposes are required to have medical insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000.

The insurance policy must cover the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area and include coverage for medical care, hospitalisation, evacuation and repatriation.

For long-term trips, such as for study or employment, you must provide a policy that covers the entire planned duration of your stay in Iceland and also meets the general requirements for continuous medical coverage. Even if you don't need a visa, it's a good idea to have insurance because medical care in Iceland is expensive and you never know when something unexpected might happen.

What kind of insurance can I get in Iceland?

People staying in Iceland for a long time can use local medical insurance. This insurance provides access to the Icelandic healthcare system and is valid throughout the country, but its disadvantages are high cost and limited geographical coverage — it does not work outside Iceland.

An alternative is to purchase an insurance policy before your trip, for example, through the Ukrainian portal Visit Ukraine. Our policies are adapted to the requirements of the Schengen visa, are available in English and can be purchased online in just a few clicks.
