We offer you an article about medical insurance for those travelling to Sweden. We will explain in simple terms who needs insurance to obtain a residence permit or a long-term visa. We will also tell you whether it is worth taking out insurance if you are travelling for a short period without a visa. Separately, you will learn about medical assistance for refugees and the mandatory ‘Green Card’ for motorists.

Planning a trip to Sweden? Make sure you have reliable insurance.

Who needs insurance to enter Sweden?

According to official sources and Swedish law, medical insurance requirements for entry into the country depend on the person's citizenship and purpose of stay.

For whom is medical insurance mandatory for entry into Sweden?

Citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who plan to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days for the purpose of study or work are required to have a valid medical insurance policy that covers the cost of medical care in Sweden. This is one of the conditions for obtaining a residence permit (uppehållstillstånd) for the purpose of study or employment. The requirements for such a policy may include a minimum amount of coverage and a list of medical services.

Citizens of countries that require a visa for stays longer than 90 days (e.g. for family reunification) must also provide proof of medical insurance that meets Swedish standards as part of the visa application package.

For whom is medical insurance for entry into Sweden desirable?

For citizens of countries with which Sweden has a visa-free regime (e.g. for short-term trips by Ukrainian citizens for up to 90 days within a 180-day period), there is no mandatory requirement for medical insurance. However, it is strongly recommended to have a policy for several important reasons:

1) The cost of medical care in Sweden is quite high, especially for non-residents. In the event of an unexpected illness or injury, not having insurance can lead to significant financial expenses.

2) Access to quality medical care: Having an insurance policy can facilitate access to necessary medical services and ensure their timely provision. An insurance company can help arrange a visit to a doctor or hospitalisation.

3) Coverage for emergencies: An insurance policy can cover the cost of emergency medical care, transportation to a hospital and, if necessary, medical evacuation to your home country.

4) Peace of mind while travelling: With medical insurance, you will feel more protected and confident in the event of health problems, allowing you to fully enjoy your trip.

Despite high medical costs, living in Sweden is cheaper than in 79% of European countries. You can find out the prices for housing, food and transport in Sweden by following the link.

What medical care is provided to refugees in Sweden?

Persons seeking asylum in Sweden and granted refugee status or other forms of temporary protection are entitled to medical care under the Swedish healthcare system. Once they have been granted official refugee status, they are usually registered with the social security system and have access to state-funded medical services on an equal footing with Swedish residents. However, during the asylum application process, refugees are also entitled to necessary medical care, the conditions for which are governed by separate rules and procedures.

Remember! Obtaining a personal number in Sweden will greatly simplify your life and interactions with government agencies.

What car insurance policy should you choose for entry into Sweden?

If you plan to travel to Sweden in your own car, you must have an international insurance certificate ‘Green Card’ (Grönt Kort) to enter the country. This policy confirms that you have civil liability insurance for third parties in the event of damage to their life, health or property as a result of a traffic accident in Sweden. Without a valid Green Card, you may be denied entry to the country or be required to purchase a local border insurance policy.

Sweden is known for its strict parking regulations. Before travelling, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the traffic rules in Sweden to avoid fines.

General requirements for insurance policies for short-term and long-term trips

Insurance policy requirements under Swedish law

1. The recommended coverage amount is at least €30,000.

2. The policy must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Sweden.

3. The insurance must cover expenses within the Schengen Agreement or Europe.

4. The policy must cover the costs of emergency medical care, injuries, transport to hospital, inpatient treatment and repatriation, including in the event of death.

5. It is important that the insurance company has an agreement on reimbursement with an international insurance company located in the Schengen Agreement countries.

Mandatory insurance requirements for Schengen countries

1. The amount of coverage significantly exceeds €30,000, with a guarantee that any costs for recovery and repatriation and the costs of treatment for COVID-19 will be covered.

2. The insurance covers a wide range of risks (doctor's visits, hospital treatment, medication, etc.).

3. Coverage area – all Schengen countries.

What insurance can I get in Sweden?

Before travelling to Sweden, we recommend that you take out insurance in your country of residence. Of course, you can do this upon arrival in the country, but in this case, there is a risk of encountering a number of unpleasant situations, such as:

– limited coverage (only Croatia);

– high prices;

– misunderstanding of the nuances of Croatian legislation;

– possible misunderstandings in translation.

Taking out medical or travel insurance from Ukrainian insurers has a number of advantages:

1. Simplicity and online availability: Ukrainian insurance companies offer a wide range of insurance plans that can be conveniently taken out online.

2. Understanding the needs of Ukrainians: Domestic insurers are well aware of what Ukrainian tourists need and what medical risks may arise during travel, so their policies take these features into account.

3. Affordable price: Insurance from Ukrainian companies is usually cheaper than from foreign ones.

4. Support for the national economy: By purchasing a policy from a Ukrainian company, you contribute to the development of the insurance market and support the Ukrainian economy.

5. Convenient settlement of insurance claims: Ukrainian insurers have experience working with Ukrainian citizens, which can facilitate the process of obtaining compensation in the event of an insured event.
