The issue of comfortable housing remains relevant for many Europeans, as well as Ukrainians seeking refuge abroad. According to Eurostat, the level of overcrowding in Europe is gradually decreasing, but the situation remains tense in a number of countries.
Overcrowding means that residents do not have enough rooms to live comfortably, which can create additional stress and negatively affect their quality of life.
We will tell you where in the EU today it is most difficult to rent comfortable housing.
Leading countries in terms of housing overcrowding
The countries with the highest levels of overcrowding are:
• Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Kosovo - more than 64.6% of apartments in these countries are considered overcrowded. This means that for many residents, minimum comfort standards remain unattainable.
Countries with high levels of overcrowding (over 30%):
• Poland
• Turkey
• Bulgaria
• Slovakia
These countries also have significant problems with access to comfortable housing due to the limited amount of housing space per capita.
The average level of overpopulation is 15-30%:
• Czech Republic
• Hungary.
These countries are performing better, but still have a significant percentage of their population facing problems with insufficient living space.

Least overcrowded countries in Europe
If comfortable housing is a priority, pay attention to the following countries:
• The Netherlands - the overcrowding rate is one of the lowest in Europe (3.4%).
• Malta and Cyprus have even lower rates, which makes these countries leaders in affordable comfortable housing.
What if you are planning to move abroad?
Finding comfortable housing can be a challenge, especially if you are planning a temporary move or emigration. It's important to consider not only the level of overcrowding, but also the overall cost of housing, salaries, and legal requirements.
Alternative options:
1. Consider countries with a low level of overcrowding (the Netherlands, Malta, Cyprus). This will allow you to avoid difficulties with finding housing.
2. In Poland, the Czech Republic or Hungary, it is possible to find affordable housing with careful planning, especially in smaller cities.
3. Use the services of local real estate rental agencies to help you find the best option.
