Transcarpathia is a land where mountains meet the sky, and traditions meet legends. Time slows down here, allowing you to feel every breath of the forest, every step along the trail, and every drop of thermal water. In the summer of 2025, the region opens up in a new way: without crowds, noise, and haste, but with a maximum of impressions.

We have collected for you the most striking places that are definitely worth seeing, and convenient tours from Visit Ukraine that will help you do it easily, safely, and with a guide who will show you the main things - and the hidden ones.

Nature and mountains: active recreation in the Carpathians

Tourists who want to escape from the city, see mountain landscapes, walk along the trails of Chornohora or admire lakes with crystal clear water are advised to choose active recreation in Transcarpathia, in particular:

- Hoverla is the highest peak of Ukraine, but climbing it is not particularly difficult, which is why climbing Hoverla is so popular with tourists.

They say that every Ukrainian should conquer Hoverla, because here, at an altitude of 2061 meters above sea level, you forget about fatigue and everyday problems that remained below, about all the incredible efforts that you made to get here and understand - "yes, it's worth it".

From Hoverla, dizzying panoramas of the Svydovetsky and Chornohorsky ranges open - incredible landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains, stretching for many kilometers around.

Climbing Hoverla is an ideal one-day route for lovers of heights and impressions, the hike is supervised by a guide, so it is safe even for beginners.

- Mount Shpytsy is one of the most picturesque peaks of Chornogora with bizarre rock ledges resembling spires. A trip here opens up incredible panoramas of the mountains and allows you to see Lake Nesamovyte - a mysterious mountain reservoir shrouded in legends. Here, nature is as dramatic and real as possible, and the silence and landscapes seem to transport you to another reality.

- Dovbush Rocks - a unique natural formation among the Carpathian forests. Massive stone blocks create an almost mystical atmosphere. This place is shrouded in legends about the Opryshki, in particular Oleksa Dovbush - the Carpathian Robin Hood. The grandeur, silence of the forest and bizarre shapes of the rocks create the impression that you have found yourself in an ancient sanctuary.

- Lake Synevyr is the largest and deepest mountain lake in Ukraine, often called the "Pearl of the Carpathians". It is surrounded by ancient virgin forests and picturesque peaks, creating a fabulous atmosphere of peace and harmony. Here you can enjoy clean air, the silence of the forest and wonderful hiking trails that lead to observation decks with fantastic panoramas.

In addition to natural landscapes, Synevyr has legends and stories that add special magic to the place. This is an ideal place for family vacations, photo walks, eco-tourism and immersion in the world of nature, where you can relax from the city noise and regain strength.

Ancient castles and historical sites of Transcarpathia

In addition to the incredible beauty of the mountains, Transcarpathia is also a deep history: fortresses, monasteries, rocks with legends and ruins of ancient fortifications, there is something to surprise even experienced tourists:

- The Templar Castle in Seredny is one of the most mysterious structures in Transcarpathia. This castle of the 11th-12th centuries is associated with the Knights Templar, who had a strategic base here at the crossroads of trade routes. Despite partial destruction, the preserved walls still impress with the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, and the surrounding village with vineyards adds a special charm to the location. This is an ideal place for those who are looking for non-standard historical points outside the tourist templates.

- Khust Castle is a unique place that allows you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and experience the history of Transcarpathia with your own eyes. From the top of the castle, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, the Tisza River, and the city of Khust itself – a perfect place for incredible photos. In addition, you can see ancient fortress walls and towers that tell the story of heroic battles against enemies.

Atmospheric cities of Transcarpathia: charm, history and architecture

Transcarpathian cities have preserved the true spirit of Central Europe, here you can feel multiculturalism and a leisurely pace of life, as well as see ancient architecture:

- Uzhhorod is the real heart of Transcarpathia, where centuries-old history, European charm and the colorful atmosphere of a border town are combined. It attracts with cozy streets, an old center with small squares and cafes reminiscent of Budapest or Vienna. The main decoration is Uzhhorod Castle, which rises on a hill and preserves history from the 11th century. It is worth walking along the Linden Alley, one of the longest in Europe, and also taking a look at Skansen - an open-air museum of folk architecture, where authentic huts from all over the region are collected.

- Vynohradiv is one of the oldest and most colorful cities of Transcarpathia with a rich history and the unique status of a “royal city”. Here you can see ancient churches, architectural monuments and feel the atmosphere of real history, which makes this city special among others. Vynohradiv combines the cultural heritage of different peoples, which is reflected in its unique charm and traditions.

Gastronomic Transcarpathia: delicious, authentic, soulful

Transcarpathian cuisine is a real gastronomic mosaic that reflects the multinationality of the region. The traditions of Ukrainian, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and even Jewish cultures are intertwined here, which makes local dishes extremely diverse and delicious. The main ingredients are fresh seasonal vegetables, mushrooms, meat, corn, dairy products and herbs that grow in the Carpathians.

Among the most famous dishes are bograch (thick Hungarian soup with meat and pepper), banosh (creamy corn porridge with cheese and cracklings), various homemade cheeses and liqueurs. Special attention is paid to pastries - from fluffy dumplings to fragrant pies with cheese or fruit.

Gastrotours in Transcarpathia provide an opportunity not only to taste these dishes, but also to learn about their history, preparation and local traditions. This is a real taste journey that every tourist should experience.

Folk art of Transcarpathia

Transcarpathia is not only picturesque mountains and thermal springs, but also a place where unique traditions and crafts are preserved. One of such pearls is the village of Iza, located just a few kilometers from Khust. Iza is famous for its wickerwork - a craft that is passed down from generation to generation. Here, craftsmen create real masterpieces from willow vines: from elegant baskets to sophisticated furniture. The streets of the village turn into an exhibition of products, where everyone can buy a unique souvenir or even order an individual wicker product.

Nearby, between the villages of Iza, is the only deer farm in Ukraine, a visit to which will be a pleasant bonus for travelers, here tourists can walk around the territory, watch the deer and even feed them special delicacies.

These locations are a great choice for those who want to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of traditional Transcarpathia, learn more about local crafts and enjoy communication with nature.

Transcarpathia is a unique region where everyone will find something for themselves: from exciting mountain hikes to calm walks through ancient cities, from incredible gastronomic discoveries to immersion in local traditions and crafts.
