The long distance and complicated logistics do not stop Ukrainians from traveling, as many have relatives in Ukraine or simply miss their home. However, it is worth choosing transportation for the trip and planning the route in advance.

The first stage is by plane to Europe

Many Canadian cities offer direct flights to countries bordering Ukraine. We recommend choosing Poland or Moldova, as these countries have direct trains and buses to Ukrainian cities.

For example, you can buy a ticket to Warsaw, Katowice, or Gdansk for the current month from 13,000 UAH ($430). Keep in mind that airfares fluctuate, so on the day of your purchase, the price may be higher or lower than the one indicated in the material. 

Tickets to Chisinau are slightly more expensive - from 21,000 UAH ($560). In Canada, flights depart from various cities, including Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Winnipeg.

After the flight, you need to continue your journey by land. The best options are rail or bus. We will tell you about them below.

It should be added that Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary also have direct connections with Ukraine, so you can choose these countries as your first destination.

If you plan to travel to Ukraine by train, buy tickets in advance, as they are in high demand among Ukrainians and foreigners. 

From Warsaw you can get to Kyiv, from Przemyśl to Kyiv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia, and from Chełm to Kyiv and Kharkiv. There are direct trains from Budapest and Vienna to Kyiv, and from Kosice in Slovakia, you can get to Chop and Mukachevo. Another convenient option is a direct train to Kyiv from Chisinau.

It is easier to buy a bus ticket than a train ticket. This is due to the wide range of carriers and the numerous cities from which buses depart. However, it is worth remembering that a bus trip can take up to 20 hours.

The most budgetary bus carriers from Europe to Ukraine: 

• LeoExpress. Buy tickets to Lviv, Uzhhorod or Mukachevo from Prague, Vienna, Krakow and Katowice;

• FlixBus. The largest bus carrier in Europe, which covers almost all of Europe and will take you to most cities in Ukraine;

• Ecolines. This bus company often offers tickets at favorable prices from Poland and the Czech Republic;

• RedioJet. A Czech carrier that will take you from the Czech Republic to Kyiv at a favorable price.

Rules for temporary departure from Canada

Many refugees wonder if they can leave Canada and return without losing their temporary protection. The CUAET program allows this: Ukrainians can leave the country as long as their visa is valid. To return to Canada, you only need a passport and a visa. No other documents are required.

However, a visa is not a guarantee that a person will be allowed to enter the country. It allows you to fly to Canada and apply to a border guard for entry. Unfortunately, the border guard officer has the authority to reject the application. Such situations are rare, but you should be aware of them. In this case, you should clearly explain to the officer the purpose of your stay in Canada.
