Medical insurance is not only a recommendation, but often a requirement when visiting Slovakia. Depending on the purpose of the visit, an insurance policy may be mandatory or desirable, but in any case - extremely important for your safety.

- Tourists, students, employees

For all foreigners who apply for a national visa or temporary residence permit in Slovakia (residence permit), having medical insurance is a mandatory condition. This applies to:

1. Students of Slovak universities,

2. Employees who have received a work permit,

3. Family members who are reuniting with relatives in the country.

The policy should cover the costs of treatment and repatriation in the event of illness or accident. As a rule, the amount of coverage should be at least 30,000 euros, and the insurance company should be recognized in the EU.

- Visa-free: do I need insurance?

Ukrainian citizens can stay in Slovakia for up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa. Formally, medical insurance is not a mandatory document for visa-free entry, but border guards may request it as proof of your financial preparedness for unforeseen situations.

- Insurance for refugees

Foreigners who have received temporary protection in Slovakia are entitled to state health insurance, which covers basic medical services. What are the requirements for an insurance policy for a trip to Slovakia?

An insurance policy for entry into Slovakia must meet certain standards, depending on the duration and purpose of the stay. Two categories can be conditionally distinguished: short-term (up to 90 days) and long-term trips (more than 90 days, with a visa or residence permit).

1. Short-term trips (tourism, business, transit, visa-free)

If you plan to stay up to 90 days, you need a medical insurance policy that meets the requirements of the Schengen area, namely:

- Minimum coverage amount – 30,000 euros

- Coverage of emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation costs

- Policy validity throughout the Schengen area

- Insurance company must be recognized in the EU

Such a policy may be required both when applying for a visa and at the request of a border guard for visa-free entry. Even if you are not asked to show the document at the border, it can be critically important in case of sudden illness or injury.

2. Long-term trips (study, work, residence permit)

When applying for a national visa type D or temporary/permanent residence in Slovakia, the requirements for the insurance policy are more stringent:

- The policy must be valid for the entire period of stay in the country (from 90 days to several years).

- It must cover all medical services, including outpatient and inpatient treatment

- Some regional migration offices in Slovakia require that the insurance be concluded with local or European companies

- It will be an advantage to have a Slovak-language version of the contract
