Ukrainian driver's licenses are recognized in most countries around the world. In particular, they are valid in all European Union countries, as both Ukraine and the EU are signatories to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. However, there are a number of countries where Ukrainian licenses are not recognized, and an international driver's license (IDL) is required to legally drive a car.

Where Ukrainian licenses are not valid: list of countries

If you are planning a trip or temporary stay in one of these countries, make sure to obtain an IDP in advance. It will be required in the following countries:

United States

Canada

Australia

India

Egypt

Japan

China

New Zealand

Malaysia

South Korea

In addition, Ukrainian licenses are not valid in North Korea, Eritrea, and Somalia.

How to obtain an international driver's license?

IDPs are issued by service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The application process is quite simple and takes up to 5 business days.

The license is valid for 3 years, but its validity automatically expires when your national driver's license expires.

What is required to obtain an IDP?

To obtain the document, you need:

a valid Ukrainian driver's license;

a Ukrainian passport;

an identification code;

a photograph;

an application for an MPV;

a receipt for payment of the service.

Before traveling, be sure to check that your insurance is valid on the date of crossing. And it's better not to take any chances with dubious sellers — choose trusted online services to avoid problems at the border and focus on your trip.
