What should a foreign tourist definitely have in their backpack in Ukraine?

Preparing for a trip to Ukraine is a responsible process that requires consideration of all the details. In particular, we are talking about the specifics of travelling to a country at war. Find out what to take with you to Ukraine and how to pack your backpack for the trip
Ukraine is a country of incredible landscapes, rich history, deep culture and extremely hospitable people. Despite the challenges of today, it remains open to tourists, offering unforgettable experiences. To make your trip as comfortable and safe as possible, it is important to prepare responsibly and, above all, pack your backpack correctly. This guide will help you avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure peace of mind while exploring our beautiful country.
What items should you definitely have in your backpack?
A properly packed backpack is the key to a successful trip. Here is a list of things that will come in handy during your trip to Ukraine:
Documents and copies: This is the most important thing! In addition to your original passport and, if necessary, visa, be sure to carry photocopies with you. Also, make digital copies of all important documents (passport, tickets, reservations) and upload them to a cloud storage service that is accessible offline, or send them to yourself by email.
A key factor for your safety in Ukraine is medical insurance that covers military risks. A standard insurance policy does not cover incidents related to military action. That is why Visit Ukraine offers a unique opportunity to purchase such a policy online, guaranteeing you protection and peace of mind during your stay in the country. Be sure to add this insurance policy to your documents!
Basic medicines and first aid supplies: Bring a personal first aid kit with medicines you take regularly, as well as painkillers, fever reducers, bandages, antiseptics, allergy and stomach upset remedies. Don't forget bandages and cotton wool.
Chargers, power bank and adapter: Modern travel is impossible without gadgets. Make sure you have chargers for your phone, camera and other devices. A power bank (external battery) is your best friend, especially when travelling or during power outages. European type C and F sockets are used in Ukraine, so if you are coming from a region where other standards are used, bring a suitable adapter.
Cash in hryvnia and international payment card: Although cashless payments are very common, cash (hryvnia) will come in handy in small markets, remote areas or for tips. Be sure to notify your bank about your trip abroad to avoid your card being blocked.
Map or app with offline navigation: Despite the availability of the internet, it is always useful to have an offline map (e.g. downloaded from Google Maps or Maps.me) in case you have no coverage or your phone runs out of battery.
Personal hygiene items, wet wipes and antiseptic: These items should always be at hand, especially during long journeys or excursions.
Comfortable accommodation is the key to a successful trip to Ukraine. Follow the link and find out how to book accommodation in advance in any region of Ukraine.
What should you take with you when travelling to the countryside?
For trips to remote places or the countryside: If you are planning hiking trips, visits to nature reserves or other types of active recreation, add the following items to your backpack:
1. Flashlight (preferably a headlamp) – for dark hours or shelters.
2. An additional first aid kit with an extended set of first aid supplies.
3. A thermos – for hot drinks in cool weather or cold water in hot weather.
4. A whistle – to signal danger or if you get lost.
5. Comfortable footwear and clothing for the weather: Choose footwear that is suitable for long walks and clothing that is appropriate for the weather and season. Don't forget a raincoat, regardless of the forecast!
6. Insect repellent (especially in summer and spring).
Insurance is a mandatory requirement for entry into Ukraine. Get detailed instructions on how to purchase medical insurance for travel to Ukraine on the Visit Ukraine portal.

What should you NOT take with you on your trip?
To avoid unnecessary hassle and risks, it is better to leave some things at home:
Excess cash: Large amounts of cash always attract unwanted attention. It is better to rely on bank cards and withdraw cash as needed from ATMs.
Bulky and cumbersome equipment that is difficult to protect: Unless you are a professional photographer, you probably don't need a huge camera with multiple lenses. Modern smartphones take great photos.
Extra jewellery and valuables: Leave jewellery and items that may attract attention or cause excessive stress if lost at home.
Remember that the most important thing is your safety and comfort. Proper preparation and a responsible approach to packing your backpack will allow you to fully enjoy the unique atmosphere and beauty of Ukraine. Have a nice trip!
