On 7 September, Dutch politician Geert Wilders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. On 9 September, on his social media accounts, Wilders suggested that the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian men should be abandoned. Geert Wilders' party has gained considerable popularity in the Netherlands and has a significant political influence. Read the details of the meeting between the representatives of the states, information on Geert Wilders' proposal and the functioning of his political party in the article.

What was the meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Geert Wilders about?

First of all, Wilders spoke about the Netherlands' support for Ukraine in the “terrible” war. They also talked about the possibilities of achieving peace and the policy of preventing corruption. The conversation also touched on the situation with Nord Stream and mobilisation in Ukraine. Wilders said that the issue of Ukrainian men who have left for the Netherlands when they have the opportunity to join the rebuilding of their own country was also discussed at the meeting.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed the partners about the security situation and the challenges faced by the Ukrainian authorities and ordinary citizens during the war. They also discussed the implementation of the Peace Formula presented at the first Peace Summit and preparations for the second Summit.

What was Geert Wilders' message about?

On 9 September, Wilders wrote a post on his Twitter page, which was the result of a meeting with the Ukrainian President (here is a translation, the original version can be found here):

"The Netherlands cannot take it anymore. Our country is already overcrowded.

Ukrainian men who can help defend and rebuild their homeland should be returned to Ukraine. This can be done by not extending or terminating the European Temporary Protection Directive."

As we can see, the main reason for this decision is the overload of the country. By the way, Wilders himself is known for his tough anti-immigration policy.

Only the Netherlands is overloaded. European politicians demand an even distribution of Ukrainian refugees among European countries. For example, this year, some regions of Germany can no longer accept migrants.

What influence do Geert Wilders' political views have on Dutch policy?

Geert Wilders is the leader of the right-wing populist PVV party, which gained significant support from the population during the last elections in the country. In May 2024, a new coalition of 4 parties was formed (Wilders‘ Freedom Party, the centrist-right-wing VVD, the centrist NSC, and the populist PVV Farmers’ Party), with PVV as the leader. World political analysts consider the coalition to be one of the most right-wing in recent decades. In June 2024, the PVV won 7 seats in the European Parliament elections, which indicates the growing popularity of far-right political forces.

The party leader himself is known not only for his anti-immigration policy, but also for his right-wing radical views and harsh criticism of Islam.

At the moment, some European politicians are concerned about the PVV's growing ashenness. For example, during a lecture in Amsterdam, the head of the FNV trade union, Thierry Elzinga, said that populist politicians threaten democracy because they restrict people's rights rather than solve problems. In this lecture, Geert Wilders was cited as a representative of politicians with authoritarian ambitions.

Some European countries have extended temporary protection for Ukrainians. Some of them are granting such protection again. In which European countries Ukrainians can receive repeated temporary protection, read the article.
