Britain is holding early elections to the lower house of parliament, and for the first time in 14 years, Labour, led by Keir Starmer, is expected to come to power. Here's what to expect from their policy and how it will affect relations with Ukraine.

Expectations from the British election

According to opinion polls, the Conservatives will not win more than 100 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, which is the primary source of power in the country.

At the same time, Labour is expected to gain a majority, which it has not seen since 1997. The party may have more than 400 MPs in the lower house.

According to the BBC, there is no doubt that Labour will win. The only question is how devastating the Conservative defeat will be.

Is Starmer the new prime minister?

The election is expected to result in Labour leader Keir Starmer becoming the new Prime Minister instead of Conservative Rishi Sunak.

On the eve of the election, Keir Starmer's approval rating was 44%, while Rishi Sunak's was over 22%.

Why do the British want to remove the Conservatives from power?

According to the same BBC, the disappointment with the Conservative policy is caused by the fact that people in the country are getting poorer, the quality of public services is declining, and there is a lack of housing. There are also problems with healthcare, prices and wages.

In addition, the Conservative Party has radically changed Britain since 2010, organising its withdrawal from the European Union, cutting public services and welfare spending. Britons say their country is worse off now than when the Conservatives came to power. Their dissatisfaction is evident on almost every issue, from the economy to education.

British citizens are also dissatisfied with the Tory party's migration policy. The Conservatives have allowed hundreds of thousands of migrant workers into the country to compensate for the loss of European workers after Brexit (Britain's withdrawal from the EU).

What should Ukraine expect from these changes?

It should be noted that the UK is a key ally of Ukraine, which continues to fight for its independence against the russian occupiers. Since the beginning of the war, the British have provided Kyiv with billions of pounds worth of aid. Therefore, Ukrainians should be as interested in Britain's domestic policy as they are in the US.

While the US has some "swings" in its support for Ukraine, in Britain everything is clear. Labour has been supporting the Conservatives on the Ukrainian issue since the beginning of the war, and its leader, Keir Starmer, has repeatedly said that nothing will change.

Earlier, the Conservative leader answered a question about whether he would support the current government's promise to spend at least £3 billion a year on military aid to Ukraine: "Yes. We are in full solidarity with the current government on this issue, and that's the right thing to do," Starmer said in an interview with The Guardian.

In general, the British population shares the same opinion. According to polls, only 2% of the country's population supports russia in its aggression against Ukraine. Almost 80% of the electorate is sympathetic to Ukraine, and the number of conservatives is even higher.

We remind you! Since the beginning of russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, the British royal family has regularly expressed solidarity with Ukrainians. Today, a member of the British monarchy visited Ukraine for the first time since the Great War. Read here to find out how the visit went and what made it memorable.
