Ukrainians who fled to the United States to escape the war can breathe a sigh of relief. US President Donald Trump made a statement regarding their continued stay in the country. During a brief conversation with reporters on July 29, the politician noted that Ukrainian refugees will be allowed to remain in the United States at least until the end of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
“We will do that. We have a lot of people who came from Ukraine, and we are working with them,” Trump said in response to a question about the future of Ukrainian refugees in the US.
This statement came as a surprise, as it contrasts with Trump's well-known tough stance on immigration. Despite his reputation as a politician who advocates immigration restrictions, he assured that Ukrainians who have found temporary refuge in the US will not be forced to return home during the active phase of the war.
Background: rumors of deportation and denial from the White House
Information about the possible revocation of status for Ukrainian refugees in the US appeared back in March 2025. Later, in May of the same year, the Trump administration allegedly planned to deport more than 200,000 Ukrainians. This news caused a wave of anxiety in the Ukrainian diaspora.
However, within a few days, the White House categorically denied this information. Administration officials said that no decision had been made to change the status of Ukrainian refugees and called the media reports fake news. After that, there were no official statements on the matter until Trump's July remark.

What does this mean for Ukrainian refugees?
Today, tens of thousands of Ukrainians are in the US under various temporary protection programs, including Uniting for Ukraine. This program allows Ukrainians to temporarily live and work in the US with the support of American sponsors. However, new applications for UFU are not being accepted, and the program continues to operate only for those who are already in the country. Many of them found themselves in the country in a state of extreme uncertainty due to difficulties with extending their status, obtaining documents, or finding employment.
Trump's latest statement offers some hope for stability, at least for the duration of martial law in Ukraine. However, experience shows that even the most optimistic words of politicians must be backed up by action. Therefore, it is important for Ukrainians in the US to stay up to date with the latest news, extend their legal stay, and seek legal assistance if necessary.

How to protect your rights in the US: the importance of legal support
Ukrainians temporarily residing in the US often face bureaucratic difficulties: extending work permits, adapting to a new system of immigration rules, and uncertainty about the continuation of protection. In such cases, it is especially important to have qualified support.
