Minimum amounts for tourists in EU countries

The difference in amounts is striking. For example, Estonia requires €86 per day, while Hungary requires only €3.

How do they check if you have enough money at the border?

Border guards may ask you to provide:

- Cash

- Bank statement or ATM receipt (valid on the date of entry)

- Documents confirming your accommodation booking that covers your expenses.

If you use a card, it is advisable to have a printed bank statement or ATM receipt showing your account balance.

Rules for carrying cash to and between EU countries

Important: In addition to daily amounts for your stay, there are strict rules for carrying large amounts of cash.

Rules for entering and leaving the EU

If you are carrying €10,000 or more (or the equivalent in currency or valuables), you must declare this to the customs authorities of the country you are entering or leaving.

This applies to:

- banknotes and coins (even those that are no longer in circulation but are still legal tender);

- traveler's checks, money orders, postal orders;

- gold coins (with a gold content of ≥90%);

- gold bars or ingots (with a gold content of ≥99.5%).

Customs control and liability

Failure to submit a declaration, errors, or its absence may result in fines and confiscation of funds.

Customs has the right to conduct a personal search, inspection of luggage and vehicle.

Even if the amount is less than €10,000, if the origin of the funds is suspected to be illegal, customs authorities may detain you or seize the cash.

Cash by mail, freight or courier

If the amount is €10,000 or more, you must also submit a declaration within 30 days of being asked to do so by the customs authorities.

What if I am traveling between EU countries?

Although there is no single EU-wide rule for moving cash between member countries, some countries have their own customs requirements even for internal movements. Therefore:

Always check the customs requirements of the country you are leaving, the country you are traveling to, and any countries you are transiting through.

When planning your trip, make sure you have not only your passport, but also proof of financial solvency. Also, always be aware of the rules for importing and exporting cash to avoid unpleasant situations at the border.
