From June 27 to July 5, 2025, Spain will temporarily resume border control on its territory. The country's authorities warn that the innovation applies to land, air, and sea traffic. As stated on the official website of the European Union, the decision was made in connection with the preparation for a large-scale international event - the IV UN International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held in Seville.
This event will bring together representatives of dozens of countries, global financial organizations and experts. To ensure the safety of the participants and maintain public order, the Spanish authorities have decided to temporarily restrict free movement within the Schengen area, using the permitted exception provided for in the agreement.
Where to expect checks at the borders of Spain: list of control zones
Controls will apply to several categories of border points, including:
● Land borders with France and Portugal;
● International airports, in particular in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Alicante and several other key cities (11 points in total);
● Seaports, especially in the southern regions of the country - Andalusia, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, including Barcelona, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca.
It is important to note that even on domestic flights within the Schengen area, you may be asked to provide an identity document and clarify the purpose of your trip.
The temporary resumption of border control does not violate the principles of the Schengen Agreement. It provides for the possibility of temporary restriction of freedom of movement in cases of:
● threats to public order
● threats to national security
● major international events.
This is not the first time Spain has used this mechanism. Other Schengen countries, such as Germany, France, Austria, and Belgium, have previously used similar measures, usually during political summits and major sporting events. By the way, we told you which Schengen countries will introduce border controls in 2025 in our previous article.

What travelers need to pass the check: documents and tips
For a smooth border crossing with Spain during this period, it is recommended to:
● Have a valid foreign biometric passport (or an ID card for EU/Schengen citizens).
● Have proof of the purpose of entry and stay (visa, booking confirmation, return tickets, invitation, etc.).
● Arrive at airports or border crossing points in advance, especially during peak hours (mornings, weekends, end of the day) to avoid delays.
Having health insurance for traveling abroad is also an important element of your preparation. Such a policy is not only a prerequisite for entry into many countries, but also protects you in case of illness, injury, or emergency while traveling. You can take out reliable travel insurance quickly and conveniently on Visit Ukraine portal - the insurance policy is valid in all EU countries and includes coverage for emergency care, hospitalization, and accidents.
Although the resumption of border control is a temporary measure, its implementation will affect travel arrangements in late June and early July 2025. Take these changes into account when planning your route, prepare the necessary documents, arrive at the control points in advance, and do not forget about insurance. All this will help you avoid unpleasant situations and make your trip comfortable and safe.
We remind you! The EU is launching a new EES entry control system that will replace passport stamps. Read how the new system will work, whether queues at the border will increase, and how to prepare for traveling under the new rules here.
