Recent statements by US President Donald Trump have caused a wave of outrage in the international community. Both political analysts and ordinary citizens have spoken out against Russian narratives. In the United States, this manifested itself in the symbolic hanging of black flags, which is how Americans argue that the struggle continues, even though the US government has spoken of ‘not very good negotiations with representatives of Ukraine’. In Europe, more and more people are talking about ‘not talking about Ukraine without Ukraine’ - in particular, this refers to the peace plan developed by American politicians with the aggressor country.

What do you know about the negotiations that sparked the wave of protest?

During his first month as President of the United States, Donald Trump managed to call Vladimir Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin and send ambassadors to both countries.

The final point, which caused a fierce public outcry, was the talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Representatives of the Russian Federation and the United States met there to resolve the issue of a peaceful settlement of the armed conflict. First of all, the Europeans were outraged by the fact that Ukraine's representatives were not invited to the talks, which were supposed to regulate the security of the state. Hence the slogan: ‘Do not talk about Ukraine without Ukraine’.

On the same day, the results of the talks were announced, including the fact that the states decided to appoint high-level groups to negotiate on Ukraine, ‘working to bring the conflict in Ukraine to a swift end in a way that is durable, sustainable and acceptable to all parties’. The next morning, black flags appeared on the homes of Americans in protest against the president's policy.

Black flags are a symbol of protest in the US

Black flags in the United States first appeared during the Civil War (1861-1865). They symbolised the soldiers' determination not to ask for or grant pardons. While the white flag symbolised surrender and truce, the black flag signified the intention to destroy the enemy without the possibility of capture.

Today, black flags in the US are a symbol of support for Ukraine and its fight for freedom. The action found considerable support on social media, as those who are dissatisfied with the actions of the current government also joined the protest.

Black flags - the anniversary of the full-scale invasion

24 February marks 3 years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation began. It was then, in 2022, that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation - the war went beyond the eastern territories of Ukraine. The Russian authorities hoped to quickly seize the territories of the north, east, and south and reach the capital in a few days. It hoped that the Ukrainian people would support the aggressive policy of the ‘brothers’, but Ukrainians showed tremendous resistance - people went to the tanks with their bare hands, and lines of volunteers to join the territorial defence forces snaked around the centres of the TCC and the JV.

24 February is a tragic date in the history of the Ukrainian people. The day when relatively peaceful life came to an end and it became clear that the struggle for independence was ongoing. At the same time, it is also the day when the Ukrainian nation united in a single impulse to defend its will. Every Ukrainian in every corner of the world felt part of a great nation!
