Three years into russia's full-scale aggression, the world is once again talking about peace talks that could end the war. However, the loudest voices in this regard are those of the newly elected US President Donald Trump and his team. During his first month in office, the American leader has already managed to establish contact with russia and arrange meetings between the two countries. Despite the US administration's hasty decisions on the organisation of the negotiation process, the actual negotiations, which will establish peace, are, frankly, still a long way off. Here is what is known about the initial stages of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump's first steps

After arriving at the White House, Donald Trump almost immediately made phone calls to russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The parties agreed on the need to end the war as soon as possible.

At the same time, Trump sent his representatives to Kyiv and Moscow for a more detailed dialogue.

Soon after, russia and the United States agreed to hold talks in Saudi Arabia, where, according to the Ukrainian president, the Ukrainian side was not invited.

‘Ukraine considers any negotiations on Ukraine without Ukraine as having no results. We cannot recognise any things or agreements about us without us,’ President Zelenskyy said.

However, one of the members of the US delegation to the talks with Russia, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, explained that this week's talks between the US and Russian sides are just a chance to see how serious the Russian president is.

Rubio stressed that peace talks to end the war in Ukraine have not yet begun.

US-russia talks in Riyadh

The talks in the Saudi capital began on the morning of 18 February. The US side was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, and the head of the russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev.

Following the meeting, the US and Russian delegations agreed to ‘eliminate irritants to bilateral relations’ and continue to work on preparing talks on Russia's war against Ukraine.

The two sides agreed to appoint high-level groups to negotiate on Ukraine, ‘working to bring the conflict in Ukraine to a swift end in a way that is lasting, sustainable and acceptable to all parties’.

A three-stage peace plan

The United States of America and the aggressor country russia are proposing a three-stage peace plan to end the war in Ukraine.

This was reported on Tuesday, 18 February, by Fox News White House correspondent Jackie Heinrich, citing diplomatic sources familiar with the discussions.

‘The plan includes a ceasefire, elections in Ukraine, and then a final agreement,’ the correspondent said.

According to Fox News' sources, the US and russia consider holding new elections in Ukraine a key condition for the success of the settlement process.

Moreover, the US President himself has repeatedly spoken about the need to hold elections in Ukraine. According to US media, Trump is ready to accept any election result, including ‘the possibility of electing a pro-russian puppet’.

Truce or long-term peace?

During the recent Munich Security Conference, discussions showed that the US and Ukraine may have different definitions of the ultimate goal of the peace process.

Judging by the statements of the same Secretary of State Marco Rubio, they suggest that the stated goal will have to be achieved in stages, and the first step on this path will be a ceasefire on the current frontline.

Despite his election promises, the new US president failed to achieve peace in Ukraine within the first 24 hours of his term, but now, Bloomberg reports, citing its sources, the White House wants to achieve a truce by Easter, i.e. by 20 April. Many media outlets also point out that the deadline could be 9 May.
