A new air raid warning system will be launched in Kharkiv and Kharkiv region, which will allow signals to be separated for the city and the region. The decision was made by the executive committee of the city council on 7 February.

What will change

According to the city council, the new automated centralised alert system has already passed all the necessary tests and is ready for operation.

Now, in the event of a threat of an air attack, signals will be sent separately for Kharkiv and the region. This will help reduce the total number of alarms in the city and the region, as well as create more favourable conditions for local businesses.

The city council notes that the system is equipped with several power sources, redundant communication channels, and voice notifications. The latter will help to specify the type of threat and warn citizens more specifically.

Not a new practice

A similar warning system has already been implemented in other regions of Ukraine. For example, since 10 January, a differentiated system has been in place in Cherkasy region: in the event of a threat from enemy drones, the air raid alert is sounded only in areas where a target has been detected or where there is a potential danger (including through the operation of air defence systems). At the same time, the missile threat alert remains unified across the region and is activated simultaneously for all districts.

Similarly to Cherkasy region, Kharkiv and the region will separate alerts. If the threat comes from drones, the signal will be sent only to those areas that are actually at risk. In the case of a missile threat, the alarm will continue to sound for the entire region.

Thus, the new approach is designed to improve the accuracy of alerts, reduce business downtime and minimise inconvenience for residents of Kharkiv and the region. The city council emphasises that the warning system is an important element of civil protection, and its timely modernisation helps to ensure the safety and security of the population.
