The village of Velyatyno, located in Khust district of Zakarpattia region, is known for its healing thermal waters. The first mention of the settlement dates back to the 13th century, although it was officially founded in 1576. Velyatyno gained its popularity as a balneological resort due to the unique properties of local thermal springs. Read about the history, geography, healing waters, and the most popular routes in Velyatyno in this article.

How do geography and climate affect the popularity of Velyatyno?

The village of Velyatyno is located in the Khust district of the Zakarpattia region, in the south-west of Ukraine. It is situated in a picturesque area, surrounded by mountains and forests, which creates a unique atmosphere and promotes tourism. Velyatino is located near the town of Khust, which is the administrative centre of the district. The distance to Khust is about 9 km, which makes the village convenient for tourists who want to combine outdoor recreation with exploring the historical and cultural attractions of Zakarpattia.

The village is surrounded by mountains covered with dense forests. Oak, beech, linden, ash, and hornbeam trees predominate here. Wild cherries and various berry bushes can be found on the slopes of the mountains. The herbal flora of Velyatyno comprises several hundred species of plants, which is a testament to the rich flora of the area. The Tysa River flows through Velyatyno, which is one of the largest rivers in Zakarpattia. There are also several small streams and lakes in the village, which add to the picturesque local landscape.

The climate in Velyatyno is temperate continental, with mild winters and warm summers. Thanks to this climate, the village is attractive to tourists throughout the year.

Where does the name Velyatyno come from?

There is no complete information about the origin of the village's name, as legends are passed down from generation to generation in Velyatyno. It is said that the leader of the opryshky tribe Pintya, nicknamed Velikan for his heroic strength, destroyed the stone fortress of the regional governor, Khust Castle, with a wooden cannonball. The people of the Velyatyno are especially fond of the fact that this amazing shot was made from Mount Chavryn.

Pintya was a historical figure: there are documents in the archives that show that he was one of the leaders of the peasant uprising in the Maramorosky region in 1703-1711. Pinto's army was probably based in the forests around the villages of Kryva and Velyatyno. There was no better place for the opryshky. All suitable routes for the government's punitive detachments lay on the right bank of the Tisza River. The only way to get to the other bank, which was flooded and often overflowed, was by ferry, and even then only in favourable weather. The forests near Velyatyno were truly impenetrable thickets with steep cliffs, natural and man-made caves, various animals and clear streams. In addition, this paradise of nature was cut off from other villages by a 600-800-metre-high mountain range.
