EINE TOUR WÄHLEN

Truskavets, one of the most famous balneological resorts in Ukraine, is located in Drohobych district of Lviv region (the centre of the Truskavets city community). The town was first mentioned in 1425. Its area is over 16 square kilometres and the population is over 28 thousand people. One of the reasons for Truskavets' tremendous success is its convenient location: there is a railway station and road links. Truskavets is also interesting for its large-scale international relations - it has 15 (!) twin cities in Poland (Przemyśl, Limanowa, Jasło, Dzialdowo, Uniaw, Dębica, Zaklików Commune, Annopol), Georgia (Tskaltubo), Latvia (Daugavpils, Ludza), Slovakia (Druskininkai, Dolny Kubin), and Germany (Watlingen). The world-famous Ukrainian city of Sloviansk is Truskavets' twin city. Discover a completely new Truskavets - explore its history, geography, culture and traditions in the material from Visit Ukraine.

What makes Truskavets' geography unique?

The city of Truskavets is located in the Vorotyshche River valley (a tributary of the Solonitsa) in the foothills of the Carpathians. Its altitude is 384 metres above sea level, and the highest point is Hoshivska Mountain. By the way, Truskavets is within easy reach of other extremely interesting tourist locations: Lviv, Stebnyk, Drohobych, Skhidnytsia, Boryslav, Stryi and Morshyn.

The geographical location has given the spa resort the following advantages:

- 14 mineral water springs.

- deposit of ozokerite - ‘mountain wax’ (the only one in the world);

- availability of highly mineralised brine, from which Truskavets Barabara salt is extracted (a competitor to the legendary mineral salts from Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic)).

Where does the name of Truskavets come from?

The name of Truskavets is still a matter of debate among historians. According to one version, the name comes from the Old Russian name Trushko. According to another, the city was named after the Lithuanian name for salt, drushka, because Prykarpattia has long been a well-known centre of salt production. Another version is a dialectal one: as if the name of the town comes from the word ‘trusok’, which means small brushwood. If you hear that the name of the city comes from a strawberry variety known in Poland, don't rush to believe it, because it appeared in Europe only 300 years after the city was founded!
