On the night of 10 January, Ukraine began testing a new air raid warning system. This was reported by the representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Mariana Reva in a commentary for BBC Ukraine. Initially, the pilot project was planned for Kyiv and Cherkasy regions, but according to updated information, testing started only in Cherkasy region.

The essence of the new system

The new alert system is aimed at not alerting the entire region at once, but only those areas where there is a real threat. As the head of Cherkasy region, Igor Taburets, explained, this will minimise inconvenience to the public and businesses while maintaining safety.

For example, if an offending drone is detected in the southern part of the region, the alarm will sound only in this area, not in the northern regions, which may be hundreds of kilometres away from the danger.

Problems with the current system

Residents of large regions, such as Kyiv Oblast, have long complained about long and widespread alarms that paralyse life in areas far from the actual threat. The alarms force the closure of shopping centres, shops, pharmacies, banks, catering establishments and other facilities. Although the law does not oblige institutions to stop working during alarms, they are obliged to ensure the safety of their employees.

How the new system will work

Ihor Taburets explained that in the event of a drone threat, the alarm signal will be transmitted only to the area where the target is detected or is likely to appear. At the same time, in the event of a missile threat, the alarm will be announced throughout the entire region, as before.

Testing phase

The system will be tested in Cherkasy region for a week. If the system proves to be effective, it will be rolled out in other regions of Ukraine. However, it is still difficult to define the exact algorithm and criteria for selecting areas for local alarms. These issues will become clearer after the end of the test period.

‘Over time, we will see how it works. We may make improvements, change algorithms, and add new components,’ said Mariana Reva.
