The UK government has extended the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which was first introduced in the country in November 2023.

What will change?

According to the new rules, from 8 January 2025, non-EU nationals will need to obtain a digital permit worth £10 (about 522 UAH) to visit the UK or transit through its airports.

The permit will need to be applied for online a few days before travelling and will be valid for six months, allowing you to enter the UK an unlimited number of times during this period.

Starting from 2 April 2025, this rule will also apply to Europeans, but they will be able to apply for it from 5 March.

Who will be affected by the rules and what should Ukrainians expect?

The rules will apply only to citizens of those countries that do not require a visa to enter the UK.

Since Ukrainian citizens are still required to obtain a British visa, this rule will not apply to them - they will already be registered in the system.

At the same time, they will be exempt from the need to obtain an entry permit:

- Irish citizens;

- persons who have a residence, work or study permit in the UK;

- persons travelling with a British Overseas Territories passport;

- persons legally residing in Ireland and travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man to the UK.
