Ukrainian roots of the song
“Shchedryk” is a ritual song performed on New Year's Eve according to the old calendar. It belongs to the genre of shchedrivkas, ancient carols that were performed during winter holidays.
The author of the musical arrangement of “Shchedryk” was the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, who in 1916 created a unique version of the melody for a choir. This was his fifth arrangement of the song, and it brought him worldwide fame. The melody is based on simple but enchanting four notes that are repeated and create an atmosphere of holiday magic.
Global recognition: how Shchedryk became Carol of the Bells
Shchedryk was first performed in Ukraine in 1916 in Kyiv by the Kyiv University Choir. However, the real path to world fame began in 1921, when the Ukrainian Republican Choir (now known as the National Honored Academic Chapel of Ukraine “Dumka”) performed the song during a tour of the United States.
In 1936, the American composer of Ukrainian descent Peter Wilhousky created an English text, and it was then that the song received a new name - Carol of the Bells. In his version, the melody was associated with Christmas bells, which made the song even more popular.
