Refugees from Ukraine who are in Poland based on temporary protection status can safely go home or travel for the New Year holidays and then return to Poland. What documents are required for return?

To return to Poland without losing their temporary protection status, Ukrainians need to have one of the following documents with them:

1. Diia.pl - an electronic document confirming the right to temporary protection in Poland and simplifying border control;

2. Biometric passport - for entry under the rules of the visa-free regime.

The second option is the most common. According to official statistics, in 2023, more than 1.5 million cases of crossing the Ukraine-Poland border under the visa-free regime were recorded.

Important! You are allowed to stay in the Schengen area for no more than 90 days within 180 days.

For how long can Ukrainians leave Poland?

The Act of May 15, 2024 amending the Act on Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine stipulates that the departure of citizens cannot last more than 30 days. Otherwise, the status of temporary protection will be lost.

It is important to keep in mind that this rule applies to only one long-term departure, so short trips are not included in the total. For example, if you leave Poland for 10 days in December and another 10 days in January, your status will remain unchanged.

Can I be refused to return?

If you are planning to return to Poland with a regular biometric passport without the Diia.pl electronic document, you may encounter some difficulties. Border Guard officers may require additional documents to confirm the right to enter. For example, in 2023, there were more than 20,000 cases of refusal of entry at the border due to lack of necessary documents or violation of the rules.
