Ukrainian citizens who have travelled to Norway have faced problems with obtaining temporary protection. Some Ukrainians are denied collective protection, nrk.no reports.

Why can Norway refuse protection?

The fact is that Norway has tightened the rules for obtaining temporary protection for Ukrainians.

Now, citizens who do not meet the new rules, such as those who lived abroad before the war started or those who came from ‘safe’ regions of Ukraine, may be denied protection.

Norway announced tighter measures for refugees back in the spring. The reason is that the country has taken in a large number of people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

‘We have more than 80,000 Ukrainians in Norway. We must take measures that will enable us to provide protection to those who need it most. We need to get back to concrete measures. There is no doubt that there will be a tightening,’ said Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mel.

According to her, several Ukrainian citizens have already been denied temporary protection status.

Who can have their application rejected?

Applications for collective protection can be rejected for those who come from a region that the Norwegian Directorate for Foreigners (UDI) considers to be safe.

Here are the regions in Ukraine that the Norwegian authorities consider safe:

- Lviv region;

- Volyn region;

- Zakarpattia region;

- Ivano-Frankivsk region (added);

- Ternopil region (added);

- Rivne region (added).

At the same time, residents of other regions are entitled to temporary protection in Norway. 

However, the authorities warn that Norway will pursue a tough immigration policy, including towards Ukrainians.
