Norway is considering extending the period of collective protection for Ukrainians from three to five years. This was reported on the government's website.

It is noted that such a decision will provide the Norwegian government and parliament with more time and opportunities to resolve the situation with Ukrainian refugees.

In addition, the possibility of granting regular residence permits is being discussed.

Norway will extend protection for Ukrainians: what is known

According to Emilie Enger Mel, Minister of the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Situations, "the situation in Ukraine remains unpredictable, and the possibility to extend the permit for two additional years will allow us to make informed decisions at a time convenient for us."

As you know, temporary collective protection permits used to be issued for one year, but now they can be extended for up to three years. For the first Ukrainians to arrive in Norway in March 2025, they will reach the maximum period under the current legislation.

It is emphasized that future decisions will take into account processes in other European countries. Even if the period of temporary collective protection is extended, the government may consider abolishing the scheme and moving to regular permits before the end of the five-year period.

Who is eligible for temporary protection in Norway?

Temporary collective protection is available to all Ukrainian citizens and their families who arrived in the country as a result of a full-scale invasion. However, you cannot receive collective protection if:

• You did not reside in Ukraine before February 24, 2022;

• Resided in Norway or another country before February 24, 2022;

• You have a residence permit in Norway;

• You are not a citizen of Ukraine but have a residence permit in Ukraine.
