However, many citizens have not yet fully integrated into Sweden, in part due to the limited opportunities available to refugees. A coordination (personal) number can help to expand these opportunities, as it plays a key role in Sweden, for example, in opening a bank account or in the provision of services by government agencies. Here's how to get this number and what you need to do.

A coordination number is an identification code for people who are not registered in Sweden but need to interact with its authorities. It can facilitate contacts with employers, banks, public services, etc.

Conditions for obtaining it

If you came to Sweden due to the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian occupiers, you can apply for a coordination number or apply to move to Sweden to be registered in the Swedish Population Register. However, you need to meet certain conditions to get this document. The rules differ depending on how long you have been in Sweden and the purpose of your stay.

The easiest way to get a coordination number is to have a residence permit in Sweden. However, if you do not have a residence permit, it is also possible to obtain one.

You can apply for a coordination number under the following conditions:

- you have a residence permit with temporary protection;

- you have been in Sweden for at least two years with a residence permit;

- you are likely to stay in Sweden with a residence permit for at least three years from the date of obtaining a residence permit with temporary protection.

Please note that it is the Swedish Tax Agency that decides whether you meet the requirements for registration in the population register. A person who registers in Sweden receives a personal number.

In what other cases can I get a coordination number?

If you have a residence permit with temporary protection and you have been in Sweden for less than two years, you generally do not have to register in the Swedish Population Register. However, you can apply for a coordination number instead.

It is worth noting that you are allowed to work in Sweden if you have a residence permit and you can start working in Sweden before the Tax Agency has assigned you a coordination number and made a decision on your tax registration. However, the fact that you have been assigned a coordination number does not mean that you have been registered for tax purposes.
