Croatia, a country with a developed infrastructure and picturesque landscapes, is a popular destination for tourists. When planning a trip to Croatia by car, it is important to know the traffic rules, penalties, and other nuances to ensure a safe and comfortable trip. Here are the main aspects you should pay attention to.
The main features of the traffic rules of Croatia
1. In Croatia, right-hand traffic is used.
2. The car must have a spare tire, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, an emergency stop sign and a reflective vest. In addition, the car must have a set of spare lamps (not required for xenon, LED and similar lamps).
3. The maximum permissible level of alcohol: for experienced drivers, the permissible level of alcohol in the blood is 0.5 ppm, for new drivers and drivers under the age of 24 - 0.0 ppm.
4. Talking on the phone while driving is prohibited unless a hands-free headset is used.
5. All drivers and passengers must always wear seat belts. For children under 12 years of age, the use of child car seats or boosters is mandatory.
6. Dipped headlights must be on 24 hours a day throughout the year.
7. The use of winter tires is mandatory from November 15 to April 15.
8. Tinting of the windshield and front side windows is not prohibited, but is significantly limited (light transmission level of 75% and 70%, respectively).
9. On narrow mountain roads, cars moving uphill have priority over those going downhill.
Penalties for traffic violations
Violation of traffic rules in Croatia is punishable by fines and other sanctions. Amounts of fines for the most common violations:
– from 60 euros for not letting pedestrians pass on a pedestrian crossing;
– from 130 euros if the driver or passenger was not wearing seat belts while driving a car;
– from 50 euros for driving a car without dipped headlights;

– from 30 euros for driving without a reflective vest in the event of a car breakdown or an emergency stop.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is particularly harshly punished - in addition to fines of up to EUR 3,000, drivers face imprisonment for up to 60 days.

Croatia has a system of toll roads. Tolls are charged on highways and some tunnels and bridges. Payment can be made in cash, by credit card or electronically via ENC devices. The price depends on the vehicle category and the distance traveled on the highway.
You can view the current prices and current conditions for using toll roads on the official website.
Upon entering a toll road, the driver receives a ticket, and the fare will need to be paid at a special toll booth when leaving.
Additional tolls are charged for the Krk Bridge and the Učka Tunnel.
