Ukraine has launched 5G for the first time in a test mode, initiated by international mobile operator Vodafone. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister of Digital Information Mykhailo Fedorov.
Vodafone and Nokia hold a 5G teleconference between Ukraine and Finland
On May 25, Vodafone's Kyiv office and Nokia's Helsinki office made a call using the new communication technology to test the quality.
“Everything works,” said Mykhailo Fedorov.
5G testing in Ukraine: details
The call was made using 5G indoor test solutions that Vodafone and Nokia have implemented at the Promprylad innovation center in Ivano-Frankivsk and at Vodafone's office in Kyiv. These are the first locations in Ukraine where 5G has become available not only through special demonstration equipment.
It is known that Vodafone has been testing IMT-2020 radio technology with the 5G New Radio (NR) baseband standard for some time. This non-standalone solution allows to use 5G without replacing SIM cards and build a network based on the existing 4G infrastructure.
This way, Vodafone can quickly deploy a 5G network and increase data speeds for its subscribers.
It is noted that during the first tests, Vodafone achieved a data download bandwidth of 1508 Mbps. This is three times faster than the theoretical maximum of 4G and up to five times faster than practical speeds in 4G networks.
For the tests, we built a local solution with less power for internal networks, so the speeds have not yet reached their maximum.

Organization of the teleconference
The 5G teleconference was organized during the Action Forum 2024, which was held by The Aspen Institute Kyiv at the Promprylad Innovation Center in Ivano-Frankivsk. The forum participants heard a speech by Mykhailo Fedorov, Vice Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology Development and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
Ville Tavio, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of Finland, who recently visited Ukraine, contacted the event from Helsinki. He greeted the participants of the event and discussed investments in modern technologies. Tommi Vitto, President of Nokia Mobile Networks, also made a live 5G broadcast.
In Ivano-Frankivsk, Olga Ustinova, CEO of Vodafone, and Yuriy Fylyuk, CEO and initiator of the Promprylad innovation center, took part in the teleconference. Stanislav Prybytko, Head of Mobile Internet Development at the Ministry of Digital Transformation, and Olga Deinega, Vodafone's GR Director, attended the Kyiv office.
Next steps
To fully launch the 5G network, Vodafone still needs a license from the regulator. Despite the availability of test infrastructure, it is not yet known when the new generation of communication will be available for widespread use in Ukraine.
As you know, 5G is already available in more than 90 countries. In particular, the European Union plans to cover the entire territory of cities and main roads with 5G by 2025.
In particular, Mykhailo Fedorov announced the pilot launch of 5G in Ukraine in 2024 back in September 2023. 5G technology has many advantages and will open up new opportunities for both civilian and military use.
The speed of information transmission via 5G allows for real-time traffic control, detailed weather research, and the coordination of thousands of vehicles, which are just some of its potential applications.
At the same time, this expansion of the Internet's functions increases the dependence of various sectors of the economy on its continuous operation, especially for critical infrastructure enterprises.
