Starting September 1, 2024, the conditions for the provision of public humanitarian housing in the Czech Republic will change. All refugees, including vulnerable persons, must leave free housing or arrange for payment if they have expired the 90-day period as of this date. This is reported by proukrainu.blesk.cz.

At the same time, the information channel for foreigners Naši Ukrajinci calls: "Do not leave the search for new housing to the last minute. By the end of August, you need to find your own accommodation or arrange to pay the rent of the apartment you are currently living in."

Reasons for changes in the provision of humanitarian housing in the Czech Republic

As the Czech Ministry of the Interior explains, the system of emergency accommodation and asylum was conceived as a temporary solution. It was not intended for long-term use. The changes from September 1, 2024, are aimed at ensuring that the system fulfills its original role of providing free accommodation immediately upon arrival.

Will there be support for vulnerable categories?

Vulnerable persons who will not be able to rent housing on their own will be provided with compensatory and supportive social support. According to the Czech Ministry of Labor, the following types of assistance will be available to such categories:

– Financial assistance.

– Increased housing payments: 6,000 CZK per person in registered housing and 4,800 CZK per person in unregistered housing.

– Extraordinary immediate assistance (MOP) in case of loss or threat of loss of housing, which can be granted repeatedly during the year up to 20 times the subsistence minimum.

In addition, IOM legal consultant Teresa Ibrahim said that the Czech Ministry of Labor is preparing additional payments for vulnerable people, but there is no information yet on the amounts and conditions of receipt. 

At the same time, Olha Cherepiuk, head of the Svitlo Center, said in an interview with ProUkraine that housing payments are planned to be increased to 8,000 CZK per person in registered housing and 6,000 CZK per person in unregistered housing. However, these changes are still a draft law.

How to find accommodation until September?

The Czech Ministry of the Interior advises either renting an apartment or negotiating with a dormitory for further payment for accommodation. Other options include contacting refugee assistance centers, which provide advice on finding accommodation.
