In recent years, many Ukrainians have chosen a car as a convenient means of travelling abroad. This not only allows you to enjoy the beauty of the road, but also provides greater freedom of movement in the country of destination. However, before travelling, the question arises: do you need a power of attorney for a car to cross the border?

A power of attorney for a car is an official document that gives another person the right to drive or dispose of your car in your absence. In the context of international travel, such a power of attorney is not required, as a vehicle registration certificate is sufficient abroad, as well as in Ukraine. The document confirms, among other things, the right to use it temporarily.

A power of attorney to drive a car abroad must be notarised. It is important that the document contains all the data of the car owner, information about the vehicle itself, full details of the person to whom the power of attorney is granted, as well as the validity of the document and the list of countries to which travel is allowed.

The validity period of such a power of attorney may vary, but usually does not exceed 3 years. It is important to remember that the document must be valid for the entire period of the trip.

Conditions under which the power of attorney will be valid:

When planning trips to foreign countries, you will need a notarised translation of the power of attorney into English or the language of the destination country. This applies not only to Europe but also to other regions. Although English is widely recognised as an international language, it is better to clarify the requirements of a particular country in advance to avoid misunderstandings when crossing the border.

You will also need to legalise the document in accordance with the established procedure: perform the procedures required for the recognition of a document issued in another country, such as apostille or consular legalisation.
