Unfortunately, the war inevitably affects all spheres of public life in Ukraine. The labor market is no exception. However, according to a study by Work.ua, the labor market has recovered by 93% in terms of the number of vacancies since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. At the same time, not all sectors have seen an increase in jobs.

Where are the most vacancies now?

In terms of the number of vacancies, the labor market has almost recovered, but there are disparities in sectors. In particular, out of 28 categories on Work.ua, in nine categories, employers offer more vacancies than in January 2022. In contrast, 19 categories have fewer job offers than in January 2022. 

The highest rates of vacancy growth are in the following categories:

– Medicine, pharmaceuticals (+26%)

– education, science (+23%)

– security, safety (+22%)

– law (+13%)

– retail trade (+9%)

At the same time, the lowest recovery rates are in the categories of:

– culture, music, show business (-21%)

– telecommunications and communications (-21%)

– insurance (-22%)

– construction, architecture (-28%)

– secretarial, office work, and general administration (-32%)

The category of IT, computers, and the Internet is the slowest to recover (-35% increase in vacancies and +107% increase in job competition). For example, the number of job offers for front-end developers fell by 81%, for back-end developers by 75%, and for testers by 63%.

Remote work in Ukraine: are there any vacancies in 2024?

According to the survey, Ukrainians are eager to work remotely. However, since the start of the full-scale invasion of russia, the number of such vacancies has decreased four times, while the labor market as a whole has decreased by as much as 10 times. 

However, in January 2024, the trend began to change. Thus, the number of remote work offers is already 3% higher than in January 2022. But the average competition for remote work has increased by 63%.

New vacancies in the labor market and other tangible changes

In general, over the two years of war, there has been a significant increase in work in the public sector, namely in the field of Nonprofit, Charitable and Public Organizations, with 10 times more vacancies. In addition, there has been a significant increase in:

– vacancies for veterans (three times, but only 7% of the total labor market)

– vacancies for pensioners (about 4% of the labor market);

– vacancies for people with disabilities (up 22%).

At the same time, a new category of vacancies has emerged that was not previously represented on the website - specialists of the Defense Forces. The top positions in the Armed Forces with the most responses can be found here. The study also showed that there is a demand in Ukraine for mental health care, so there is a noticeable increase in vacancies for psychologists (by 136% in January 2024 compared to January 2022) and psychiatrists (by 129%). In addition, there is a growing demand for rehabilitation specialists and doctors. 

However, two equally important factors are that the share of women (from 57% to 62%) and young people under 25 in the labor market in Ukraine has increased, and there has been a serious de-russification of resumes and vacancies (in January of this year, 96% of vacancies were in Ukrainian).

How has the average salary in Ukraine changed?

According to the study, the average salary in Ukraine remained unchanged at UAH 15,000 for a year after the start of the full-scale invasion. The first changes occurred in January 2023, when the figure began to grow. Thus, over the past two years, the average salary in Ukraine has increased by 30%.
