In Germany, the minimum wage system was significantly changed in 2024. According to ukrainianingermany.de, the changes were made in response to dynamic economic and social conditions and now reflect the growing demand for fairer pay and offer better protection for employees.

Changes in wages in Germany: what is the minimum wage in 2024?

In 2024, the minimum wage in Germany was set at EUR 12.41 per hour, which is a significant increase compared to previous years. For example:

– in 2020, the minimum wage was 9.35 euros per hour;

– in 2021 - 9.50/9.60 euros per hour;

– in 2022 - 9.82/10.45 euros per hour;

– in 2023 - 12 euros per hour.

According to the publication, in 2025 the minimum wage will be increased to EUR 12.82 per hour. At the same time, in some areas, the minimum wage will increase in 2024. 

It is noted that the increase in wages is due to rising inflation and the cost of living. Thus, the country is trying to ensure social stability of the population and take into account the needs of the market. However, local trade unions insist on more serious changes and demand to raise the salary to at least 13.50 euros per hour.

Who won't be able to earn more in Germany?

Not everyone will be affected by the new minimum wage in Germany. Thus, the following categories of employees will be exempted:

– young people under the age of 18

– students, trainees and interns;

– self-employed persons and freelancers;

– volunteers;

– long-term unemployed (in the first 6 months of employment).

Mini-job salary: what are the changes?

A mini-job is a type of part-time employment, especially popular among students, where the salary does not exceed a certain fixed amount per month. Thus, with the changes in the field of remuneration, the earnings limits for mini-jobs have also changed from 520 euros to 538 euros per month. At the same time, the number of hours allowed for work remained the same. Namely, no more than 10 hours per week, or 43 hours per month.
