The number of Ukrainian refugees who intend to stay in the country for the next two years is increasing in the Czech Republic. Such decisions are the result of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the unstable situation in the region, proukrainu.blesk.cz reports.

Integration of Ukrainian refugees into Czech society

According to a survey by PAQ Research, 58% of Ukrainian refugees do not plan to return to Ukraine in the next two years, which indicates their readiness to integrate into Czech society. 

In the summer of 2024, 52% of respondents planned to stay in the Czech Republic for a longer period of time.

"There are approximately 310 thousand refugees in the Czech Republic. More than half of them want to stay for at least another two years. We are talking about 180 thousand people. Given the ongoing war, we cannot expect the majority of the rest to return to Ukraine in the near future," the authors of the study note.

It is emphasized that in November 2023, 37% of respondents wanted to return to Ukraine, and in June - 44%. Refugees aged 29 are more likely to plan to stay in the Czech Republic (65%), while among people aged 50 and older, 40% of respondents expressed this intention. 

People with a low level of Czech language proficiency (54%) and those with the lowest income (47%) are more likely to return to their homeland.

The report also states that the level of Czech language proficiency among Ukrainian refugees is improving, especially among children. However, not all children are well integrated into the school environment, and some refugees face discrimination in various spheres of life.

In particular, 80% of Ukrainian children aged 3 to 17 can speak Czech in at least a few sentences, and 57% can speak Czech in normal situations.

What challenges do Ukrainians face in the Czech Republic?

Refugees seeking employment and housing in the Czech Republic face significant challenges related to their origin. According to the survey, 29% of refugees have experienced verbal attacks because of their nationality, which indicates the existence of a problem of intolerance in society. 

In addition, discrimination is also manifested in the areas of life, work and access to medical care: 29% of respondents experienced discrimination when looking for housing, 21% when looking for a job, and 18% when looking for a doctor. 

It should be noted that 36% of refugees did not face discrimination at all.

In many cases, working conditions for refugees leave much to be desired. In November 2023, only 72% of able-bodied refugees had a job, and in June this figure dropped to 67%. Most of them are forced to accept unstable work schedules and work in unfavorable conditions. 

Approximately half of refugees work on weekends or late at night, and about 40% receive less pay than locals in similar positions. In particular, 30% are forced to take on additional work to ensure a sufficient level of income. 

This situation calls into question the economic and social stability of refugees in the new environment.
