There are several reasons for this, but the most important one is that due to the martial law in Ukraine, most foreign insurance policies automatically become invalid upon entry into Ukraine. This is because most insurance companies do not cover risks associated with war in any country where military operations or armed conflicts are ongoing.

According to Ukrainian law, foreigners and stateless persons may cross the state border to enter Ukraine provided they have a policy (certificate) insurance for the entire period of stay in Ukraine, issued by an insurance company registered in Ukraine or a foreign insurance company that has a representative office or contractual relations with a partner insurance company in Ukraine.

According to Part 53 of Article 7 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On Insurance’, insurance covering military risks is mandatory for foreign journalists, reporters, correspondents, opinion leaders, and media representatives.

What coverage does a military risk insurance policy provide?

When planning a trip to Ukraine, foreigners can take out standard medical insurance, which will cover a standard list of cases and services. However, given the increased risks, it is advisable to take out extended coverage.

Insurance with war risk coverage includes standard medical insurance coverage and additionally covers the risks of war. Accordingly, the insurance covers:

1. Diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, including the costs of compulsory observation. Currently, there are no restrictions on coronavirus infection in Ukraine, but in the event of illness, the insured person will be able to receive diagnosis, treatment and other necessary medical services within the scope of the policy.

2. Outpatient treatment (doctor's visits, consultations, examinations, etc.), medication (prescribed by a doctor) and hospitalisation (stay in an intensive care unit, resuscitation ward, purchase of medicines, etc.).

3. Emergency dental care. In particular, in the event of acute toothache requiring urgent dental care for medical reasons (assistance is provided within the established limits).

4. Medical evacuation (if necessary)

5. Repatriation of the insured person (or their body in case of death) from the place of stay to their place of permanent residence.

6. Accidents, injuries and fatalities that may occur as a result of active or passive military risks or terrorist acts.
