Polish hauliers have been blocking the movement of the major checkpoint Jahodyn-Dorohusk on the border with Ukraine for more than a month. However, on 11 December it became known that this checkpoint was unblocked and trucks started to pass through it. We tell you how this problem was solved and when other checkpoints may be unblocked.

"The blockade of the checkpoint "Yagodin - Dorohusk" is completed. Since 14:00 there resumed a stable movement of lorries. In the direction of Ukraine passed 15 vehicles - they are at the checkpoint. Also 25 lorries are being processed - they will be heading towards Poland," said Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov.

How did it happen to unblock the checkpoint?

According to Polish media, the decision to resume the passage of lorries from Ukraine was influenced by local authorities. The head of the local administration Dorogusk Wojciech Sawwa decided to stop the protest of hauliers. According to him, they do not fulfil the agreements and do not pass transport with dangerous goods as agreed.

Later, the Ukrainian side confirmed that the head of the Dorohusk municipality, who had previously issued a permit for the protest, cancelled the decision.

Harm of the blockade for Ukraine

For a month, only two checkpoints out of six on the Ukraine-Poland border worked. Despite the promises of Polish activists to let through important cargo for Ukraine, sometimes trucks with humanitarian goods and military aid had a hard time getting through.

The Ukrainian Employers Association estimated that in three weeks alone, this caused more than 400 million euros worth of damage to the Ukrainian economy. Prices for transport have increased several times, and this is in the hottest season - before the winter holidays.

When can other checkpoints be unblocked?

According to the Ukrainian media, on Tuesday, 12 December, blockaders may unblock another checkpoint in Rava Russka.

At the same time, the vice-president of the Ukrainian International Transport Association, Volodymyr Balin, said that the other checkpoints should be unblocked within three days. He also commented on the blockade of checkpoints on the border with other countries:

"It was right that we appealed to the Polish lawyers, that they carried out the relevant work and now there are changes to which they have to respond. On the Slovakian border our lawyers have not worked yet. But we hope that just like on the Hungarian border, de facto it is not blocked, that is a strike, but it is not blocking traffic. So the Slovak one, according to our information, should be like that. We'll see," he said in a comment to UWN.
