On September 8, the European Commission published clarifications on the interpretation of the sanctions legislation against russia, in particular the importation of cars registered in russia into the EU. In addition, the ban may also apply to the import of a number of personal items. So, it is obvious that russians are becoming even more unwelcome in Europe.
At the same time, russians continue to try to enter the territory of Ukraine. Find out how many russian citizens have managed to cross the border and why they are fleeing to Ukraine in our previous article.
Banned imports: what can russians no longer import into the EU?
According to the list set out in Annex XXI to Article H of EU Directive 833/2014, an attempt to import certain personal items will also be regarded as prohibited imports.
Thus, among the items that russians are no longer allowed to import into the EU are:
- suitcases, bags and wallets;
- some items of clothing and leather and fur products
- cosmetic products;
- semi-precious and precious stones;
- mobile phones, cameras and laptops.
The European Commission notes that these items cannot be imported by russians even temporarily when traveling for tourist purposes. This means that EU customs officials can confiscate these items at checkpoints.
As for cars, according to official information from the russian embassy in Germany, in early summer 2023, border guards began confiscating cars with russian license plates from russian citizens. In addition, those who tried to import a car for personal use or transit may face criminal liability for violating the law.

Which countries have restricted entry for russians?
After the termination of the agreement on a simplified visa regime between russia and the European Union, it became much more difficult for russians to enter the EU. This led to a rise in the visa fee from 35 to 80 euros for citizens of the aggressor country and the need to provide additional documents to enter the EU, and, accordingly, an increase in the time required for visa processing.
In addition, a number of countries have stopped accepting russian documents for tourist visas, including Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
At the same time, on June 26, 2023, the Latvian authorities decided to stop accepting documents from russians for visas of all types.
In terms of direct entry, the most stringent restrictions are in place in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland. Thus, russian citizens cannot enter these countries by air or through seaports. At the same time, even a Schengen visa will not help to cross the border in this way.
Some dissatisfaction with russian tourists is recorded in Thailand and Bali. Cases of arrests and deportations have become more frequent there. In addition to the fact that citizens of the aggressor country violate laws and regulations on a massive scale, their presence outrages the local population, as prices for buying and renting real estate in cities are rising. In addition, russians take away jobs from locals by opening services and establishments "for their own" and working illegally, through the execution of documents for third parties.
We remind you! Currently, all checkpoints on the Ukrainian border with the aggressor state remain closed, but the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine ensures the return of Ukrainian citizens to their homeland. Read more about how to get to Ukraine from russia in our previous article.
