Dr. Teresa Paola Stawski, a doctoral candidate in political science at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (JMU), analyzed each of the 173 countries in the world, with the main goal of checking how the state performs its functions. In particular, the quality of fulfillment of the tasks and powers of law enforcement and executive authorities, as well as the judiciary, was assessed.

According to Tereza Stawski, the state is manifested in everything that surrounds us: on the street, in court, in the police, in hospitals and in schools. But not in all countries can a person quickly get a high-quality medical examination, enroll in school without any problems, or use electricity around the clock. That is why this rating was compiled based on the quality of services provided by government agencies and the general state of infrastructure in cities.

The best countries in the world: who is in the top ranking

Some countries have impressive indicators, for example, the top 10 best countries in the world include:

1. Singapore

2. Australia

3. Denmark

4. Netherlands

5. Estonia

6. Luxembourg

7. Norway

8. Belgium

9. New Zealand

10 Germany

Thus, Singapore has become the best country in the world in terms of the quality of functioning of state institutions. Finland, Seychelles, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Portugal are slightly behind the top ten. Interestingly, the United States of America took 23rd place in the ranking of the best countries, and lost even to Malta and Uruguay.

Features of the analysis

Based on the data published in the report, the form of government does not affect the quality of the state's functioning. A striking example that proves this is that Singapore took the honorable 1st place, and the United Arab Emirates took the 32nd place.

At the same time, according to experts, a democratic political regime allows a country to develop more rapidly and efficiently, as citizens are involved in the process to the fullest extent possible and can contribute to the improvement of the state.

Where does Ukraine stand in the ranking of the best countries?

Ukraine was ranked 129th in the Stlx rating. It is also important that it is designated in the ranking as a country "with a defective state of statehood." This is due to the fact that Ukraine has been at war since 2014, and therefore it is simply impossible to evaluate the country on a par with others in all respects. 

Moreover, the occupation and external influence of other countries on the state were taken into account. For example, the statehood of Belarus is in a "deeply defective state," even though it is ahead of Ukraine and ranks 123rd.

The worst countries in the world to live in

The last places in the Stlx ranking are occupied by countries where state institutions are completely destroyed and do not work. In particular, Yemen, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Papua New Guinea are among the worst countries. The last place was taken by Libya, which has the worst situation of all.

In addition, Chad, the Central African Republic, Haiti, Somalia, Syria, and Venezuela have significant problems in the functioning of state institutions.
