The situation in the right-bank part of the Kherson region is difficult, with many villages and the regional center flooded, but the Ukrainian authorities are conducting a rescue operation, and more than 2,000 people have been evacuated so far. The left-bank Kherson region suffered the most because it is geographically located lower. And the main danger is that these territories are temporarily occupied by the russian army, which does not allow either Ukrainian rescuers or volunteers to enter. People and animals are in a deadly trap because russia has not taken any measures to rescue them. In addition, according to eyewitnesses, the russian military confiscated almost all boats from the local population.

Flooding in Kherson region: what is known

Dozens of towns and villages are under water, and 68% of the left bank of the Kherson region was flooded as of the morning of June 8. According to the Ukrainian authorities, due to the lack of evacuation by russia, there are victims on the left bank of the Dnipro who were unable to escape the rapid flooding.

The villages along the riverbed suffered the most, and are now not even visible on satellite images. In particular, Kokhany, Krynky, Dnipryany, Kozachi Tabory, Korsunka and Solontsi are under water.

In settlements located a little further from the Dnipro, the water rose by about 5.5 meters. People are moving to rooftops to save their lives, but they have no drinking water or food. The Ukrainian military is trying to deliver at least some food to the local population using drones, but given the scale of the disaster, this is not enough.

The towns of Oleshky and Nova Kakhovka are flooded by 90%, Pidstepne and Pishchane by 50%, and in the village of Sagy the water has risen by 3 meters and continues to rise. In the occupied Hola Prystan, the water level has reached 4 meters.

Evacuation from the left bank of the Dnipro

The russian authorities have not only failed to take measures to rescue the local population, but also do not allow local volunteers to help. They use machine guns as an argument, simply turning people around and preventing them from launching boats. 

The occupation authorities also do not allow those who try to leave the partially flooded areas on their own, blocking cars at checkpoints and forcing them to turn around. During the evacuation of the local population from Nova Kakhovka, the russian army used people as human shields to leave their own positions.

Some people are trying to cross the river on their own to the government-controlled territory, but not everyone succeeds because the current is very strong and fast. There is almost no communication with the local population due to the blackout of all towers.

In addition, russian troops are shelling Ukrainian forces that are trying to rescue people on the left and right banks of the Kherson region using artillery fire. And this is despite the fact that the day before, russia tried to shift the responsibility for the terrorist attack onto Ukraine and claimed that it would "save people." The number of victims of the Kakhovka Dam explosion

The exact number of casualties is currently unknown, as thousands of people may still be underwater who did not have time to escape the rapid flooding. Three local residents were reported dead in the occupied territories, and several dozen more people are missing.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the scale of the tragedy will become clear when the water level begins to subside. However, even under these conditions, russia may try to hide the consequences of its terror, as there is currently no access to the left bank of the Kherson region.

The Ukrainian authorities call on the international community to intervene in the situation and ensure the rescue of Ukrainians in the temporarily uncontrolled territory of the state. Those who have escaped the flood may die due to lack of food and drinking water, under the blazing sun on the roofs of their homes.
