Austrian law requires Ukrainians who stay in the country for more than a year to register their cars. However, there is a way to avoid registration. We will tell you about it and important rules for drivers.

How can Ukrainians avoid car registration in Austria?

In order to avoid registering a car, refugees need to do the following: cross the Austrian border before the end of their 12-month stay in the country. When you return to Austria, the countdown will start again, so you will have another year during which you can not register your vehicle.

Austria allows voluntary registration of vehicles if a person is a permanent resident of the country.

We would like to add that there is no simplified procedure for Ukrainians. Also, keep in mind that after receiving Austrian license plates, you are obliged to pay taxes: NoVA (standard consumption tax) and the engine-related insurance tax.

Do Ukrainian citizens need to exchange their driving license in Austria?

In July 2022, the EU adopted a regulation concerning driving licenses of Ukrainian refugees:

- driving licenses are valid in all EU countries, including Austria;

- there is no need to translate the license, even if the document does not contain information in Latin;

- a lost or stolen ID can be restored without passing exams if the Ukrainian side confirms that the document was issued. At the same time, a medical certificate is required. 

How to insure a car in Austria?

All cars driving on European roads must have a valid insurance policy. There are two ways to protect yourself from damage:

- purchase a Green Card;

- to take out border insurance.

Please note! The Green Card is the most convenient way to insure your vehicle. You can buy it online, even while you are already abroad, by providing all the necessary information on the website. It only takes a few minutes and the policy is available on your smartphone. 

Toll roads in Austria

All drivers have to pay tolls on Austrian toll roads - the privileges for Ukrainians have already been canceled. So buy vignettes to avoid violating the law.

Humanitarian aid vehicles transporting goods or displaced persons are exempt from purchasing vignettes.
