Rome has unexpectedly become the best city in the world for night tourism in 2026. The Italian capital topped the global ranking, surpassing more than fifty popular tourist destinations, including Paris and London. This was reported by the TimeOut platform, citing the results of an international study.

What is night tourism and why has it become a trend?

Experts note that night tourism is not just about evening walks and nightclubs. It is about travelling with an emphasis on the cooler hours of the day, unusual experiences and a more relaxed pace. This trend includes night tours, visiting landmarks after sunset, cultural events, open-air cinema screenings, night markets and even safaris at dusk.

Although many people associate night tourism with astro-tourism and stargazing, in practice it is a much broader concept. Over the past year, it has become one of the most notable travel trends, especially among travellers tired of the heat and daytime crowds.

How the best city was chosen

The Radical Storage luggage storage platform analysed 50 cities around the world according to four key criteria. The main emphasis was placed on night-time experiences and activities — the number of excursions, events and entertainment after sunset. Natural factors, including light pollution levels and daylight hours, also played a significant role. In addition, the safety of night-time walks and the availability of night-time transport were taken into account.

Based on the analysis, Rome scored 6.07 out of 10, with a particularly high score in the ‘experiences’ category — 9.2 points.

The Italian capital offers 305 night tours, many of which receive high ratings from travellers. Among the most popular are evening walks around the Colosseum, night tours of the historic centre, open-air film screenings, cultural festivals and markets that come alive after sunset.
