Where to ski in the Carpathians without overpaying: Ukrainian resorts worth considering

A winter holiday in the Carpathians can be both exciting and affordable if you choose the right resort. In addition to popular locations, Ukraine has ski resorts with more affordable prices for lifts, equipment and accommodation. As Finance.ua recently reported, many Ukrainians planning a winter skiing holiday are faced with rapidly rising costs at popular resorts. Sometimes it is more advantageous to choose a different place to ski, where the snow is just as good and the budget is more reasonable.

This article discusses where in Ukraine you can ski more affordably, comparing actual prices in several locations.

How much will a winter holiday in the Carpathians cost — we discussed this in our previous article.

Why look beyond Bukovel?

Bukovel has long been recognised as the largest ski resort in our country. Modern lifts, a huge selection of trails, and developed infrastructure attract thousands of tourists every winter. However, its popularity affects the cost of services.

A one-day ski pass at the resort costs about 2,550 UAH, and one lift ride costs about 400 UAH. In addition, equipment rental can cost from 300 UAH to 1,150 UAH per day, depending on the type of set and the season. And if your budget is limited, the cost of a few days of skiing will not be small.

Dragobrat: simple prices and basic comfort

Dragobrat is a completely different kind of resort: there are no glossy complexes here, but there are real Carpathian slopes and cheaper rates.

In Dragobrat, a single lift costs about 200 UAH, and several lifts are priced as follows:

– 5 lifts — 600 UAH;

– 10 lifts — 1,000 UAH;

– 20 lifts — 1,600 UAH;

– 50 rides — 2,800 UAH.

This format is convenient if you plan to ski for more than one day — you can choose a package of rides that suits your schedule.

How much should you pay for equipment?

For those who do not have their own skis or snowboard, equipment rental is an important part of the budget.

At large resorts such as Bukovel, the price of renting a set varies: in high season, the minimum rate is about 300 UAH/day, and for a more ‘advanced’ set, they may ask for up to 1,150 UAH/day.

In Dragobrat, a standard set of ski equipment can be rented for about 300 UAH/day, and individual items (ski boots, poles, etc.) — from 100 to 250 UAH per day. This allows you to save money if you don't need all the items in the set.

Where is it cheaper to stay?

Accommodation can also significantly affect your overall expenses. There are many options in Bukovel, from hostels to hotels, but even the cheapest offers in high season can start at around 1,650 UAH per night for one person.

In Dragobrat, the choice of accommodation is more modest, so prices for basic options start at around 2,000 UAH for a double room on the same dates. However, there are often fewer queues for the lifts and a quieter holiday.

How to choose the best option?

The choice of resort depends on what is more important to you: a wide selection of slopes and services or lower base rates and the atmosphere of natural slopes. For those who come primarily to ski and control their budget, it may be more profitable to look towards less popular destinations with flexible rates for lifts and rentals.
